magnets. Anytime we were near, we were pulled together.
Yet, even with that constant attraction, we could never get things to work quite right. Maybe it was timing. Maybe the problem
was us.
But there was no guarantee it would work this time either.
Even so, I couldn’t help but be pleased as we moved from our corner out into the main of the ballroom, and Jason continued holding my hand.
As we mingled, I did what I could to try to subtly ask about wolfsbane, but whenever I ever hinted at the topic, people would change the subject. Some would even turn away from me without saying a word. A lot wouldn’t even talk to us, not even to say hello.
One told me, “It’s distasteful to discuss the wolfsbane.”
After that, we decided to change gears, hoping to just make more connections, but we didn’t have much luck. With Jason holding my hand, the sting of rejection wasn’t overmuch.
The good food helped, as well.
I hadn’t seen Richard yet.
After the brunch, an official looking servant came to us and said, “The Alpha has invited you to the wolf run that is after the brunch. If you will join us at the patio.”
Jason looked at me. “I think we will pass on that.”
I exhaled the breath I hadn’t realized that I’d been holding. I couldn’t shift on command like other wolves. This was just one more instance of Jason protecting me.
The servant sneered ever so slightly. “Those that are choosing to sit out the run are convening on the terrace.”
“Thank you,” I said.
He gave no response, simply turning and walking away, moving to speak with the next group of guests.
When he was out of earshot, I gave Jason a look.
“He said the terrace,” Jason said. “But there’s no reason we couldn’t take the long route to get there.“[
I knew what he wanted to do, look around. Any excuse for that was a good one, though it was a high risk, high reward kind of experience. We had to chance it though, for Ava’s sake.
Yet, before we could even make way for the terrace, I happened to look at the opened doorway, and standing there, peeking in was the shadowy figure of a woman. Her eyes were a bit wild as she glanced around.
Then her eyes fell on me. We stared at each other for a moment. Then, she turned and she ran.
“Wait!” I called out. I dropped Jason’s hand to give chase.
“Laila!” Jason said, behind me.
I ran into the hallway, with Jason right behind me. But the hallway was empty. The woman was gone.
“Why did you run off in such a hurry?” he asked me.
“I saw… Well, I don’t know who I saw. It was a woman, and I just had a feeling.”

“What kind of feeling?”
It was difficult to explain. Something inside of me had shook upon seeing her. Thad no idea who she was, reasons I didn’t fully understand.
“I don’t… I felt like maybe she was important.”
Jason looked at me with confusion and a dash of worry.
