“I do care,” I said at once. “I’ve already made plans. I will pay their tuition directly to the college and give them their own accounts with a weekly allowance. But that money goes directly to them, not to you, Victor.”
“How dare you,” Victor snapped. “You act as though I would steal that money.”
I imagined that was exactly what he would do, which was why I had arranged things as I had. Like this, there was no way that he could take the money from Vanessa’s younger siblings.
Inwardly, I lamented Vanessa’s terrible luck at being born into such a vicious family. Her father was the heir of a human noble family, but her mother had been a werewolf. As a hybrid, Vanessa had been an outsider in her own home. At ten, her parents died in a car accident and what few threads held the family together had finally frayed.
Vanessa had worked hard and proved herself by making a successful business, but her grandfather insisted that business support the entire family. She was being exploited by her family, but allowed it for the sake of her two young sisters, Jessica and Hannah, who remained under the guardianship of their grandfather.
Vanessa made me swear on her deathbed not to tell them the truth. She entrusted everything to me, including her secrets. She also asked me to protect her two young siblings.
For Vanessa, I tried to fulfill that request, even when it meant dealing with someone as vile and vicious as Victor.
“Tell my sisters to expect the money,” I said. I didn’t need to address his suspicions. My actions should have spoken for themselves and revealed how lowly I thought of my ‘grandfather.’
Victor huffed an angry breath. “You remain a disappointment to me, Vanessa. This instance aside, we are all still waiting for your marriage to William. What is taking so long? William is Ava’s father, isn’t he? This wait… it makes people wonder… And if I were to discover that you are hiding something from us…”
“That isn’t any of your business,” I said abruptly and hung up the phone.
William was a touchy subject for me. He had been Vanessa’s best friend since childhood. As part of her final wishes, he pretended to be my fiancé and Ava’s biological father to ensure that I wouldn’t have too many issues sliding into Vanessa’s life.
We’d come to be good friends, so I decided to call him now and give him some warning about Victor.
After the greetings, I told him what happened and then said, “If he calls you again, just ignore him. Truly, I’m sorry you have to go through all this.”
