The Alpha's Unclaimed Mate (Jason and Laila) by Caroline Above Story novel Chapter 402

Chapter 402

Laila’s POV

After hanging up the phone with Jason, my emotions boiled over, but nothing was as powerful as my feeling of loss. Not even my anger could compare, though it was burning hot. When he had been so ready to push Ava aside, I had practically leapt through the phone to shake some sense into him.

But I knew him well. I knew exactly what he had been doing.

He’d been running. He had been burying himself so deeply in work that he was laying his emotions to rest, including his love for Ava. Likely next to his love for me.

I was angry by this, but I was more sad about it. Not just for Ava, but also for Jason himself. How miserable he must have felt to want to hide away from those feelings, to not go near them.

Wildly, I thought of giving up my life here. Of packing Ava into the car and driving down to Jason, to reuniting our family, never to part again. But how could I do that? How selfish that would be!

My people needed help rebuilding this pack in the wake of all the damage my uncle had done. They looked to me, my father’s daughter, as a symbol of hope. If I were to leave them, that would do more harm than good.

I couldn’t be selfish, as much as I wanted to be. I had to stay here, to do my part for these people. Maybe … someday… I could leave and return to him. Would he wait for me? Would he still be single in the years ahead?

My heart ached just thinking about it.
