I jumped when I saw Jason standing there just outside of it. He unhooked his arms as I came fully out of the women’s room.

“Everything alright?” he asked, which made me wonder if he noticed Sheila follow me into the bathroom and was protectively waiting nearby.

I ignored the way that made me feel things. It didn’t matter how protective he was. In fact, I didn’t him to be protective. I could take care of myself, and I had already done so. Just now.

Without him.

“Everything is fine,” I said.

“I saw Sheila – ”

“She’s nothing I can’t handle,” I said. “I don’t need – ”

My phone started to buzz in my pocket. Quickly, I stopped to check it, glancing at the screen to see who the caller was. My heart sank as I realized it was a call from the hospital.

“I have to take this,” I said, and turning my back to Jason, answered my phone. “This is Vanessa Harper.”

“Miss Harper,” the caller said, and then introduced themselves. I recognized the name as one of Ava’s healers from the hospital.

“Is something wrong with Ava?”

“Oh, no, ma’am, my apologies for causing any worry. It’s just that Ava’s weekly medical treatment is today, and we’d like to ask you to spare some time today to accompany Ava. She is always calmer with this treatment in your presence, and we need her to stay calm for it to have the best effect.”

“I understand.” I checked my watch. “I can be there in an hour. Would that suffice?”

“Yes, I’ll mark it down. Thank you, Miss Harper.”

“Anything for Ava,” I said. “Goodbye.” I clicked off the phone, and turned around. I nearly jumped when I saw that Jason was still standing where I had left him.

“I didn’t mean to overhear,” Jason said. Before I could be annoyed at his eavesdropping and scold him, he asked, “Is Ava alright?”

I couldn’t be mad at him for caring about the health of a child. Not when I had spoken loudly enough for him to realize something might be wrong with her.

“She’s alright,” I said. “They just prefer when I’m there

one of her weekly treatments. It makes things go more smoothly.”

“That must wear on you,” he said. “Having to work, worrying about Ava, being on your own…”

“I’m fine,” I said. He was right, of course, but that wasn’t anything I was going to talk about with him.

“Please allow me to offer my assistance,” he said.

I stopped and looked at him. Really looked.

“If you are busy or need someone, I can help with Ava,” he continued.

His face was serious and somewhat open. From what I could tell, he was being genuine.

I had no idea what to think about that. Was this the new Jason? Someone considerate and compassionate. Someone who wanted

like a friend? to be there for people – for me

So many mixed feelings swirled inside of me, I could barely make sense of them all. I felt like I was awash in the middle of the

ocean, and all I could do was eling onto my life preserver, holding on for dear life.
