Chapter 84

Jason’s POV
Though I had exiled Sheila from my pack, Vanessa’s company was on neutral ground. Therefore, I had no authority to have her fired from her job. Even if I did, I would want to handle things in the correct way so that nothing reflected back onto Vanessa herself.
Sheila was the bad apple here. She needed to be expelled from the batch.
Vanessa, meanwhile, was the golden star, able to be professional and continue meetings successfully even after having endured such hostility as Sheila had wrought. She should have been commended for a job well done.
I waited until regular working hours, and then I called Vanessa’s company, specifically requesting to be connected with all members of the board on a conference call. It took some time to accomplish this, during which I waited, debating what I would
say.
When the conference was finally aligned, with everyone on the call, I was fired up and more determined than ever.
“Alpha Jason,” said one of the board members through the phone. “We are told you wanted to speak with us.”
“Yes,” I said. “I want to ensure all of you know what your employee Sheila has been up to, and how she has been harassing Vanessa.”
There was a brief pause. “Sheila has been placed on suspension…”
“That’s not good enough,” I said. “Her behavior has been a smear or the entire company’s reputation, including that of your
board.”
“We’ve heard there have been some disagreements…”
“Not just mere disagreements,” I said. “Sheila threw a small bottle of alcohol on Vanessa and then attempted to accuse her of coming to our meeting drunk. She accused her of being an alcoholic. She might have even gotten away with it, if there hadn’t been video evidence to support Vanessa’s innocence.”
That silenced the board.
“We had received reports from both Vanessa and Sheila regarding the incident. A pair of our board were there, but…”
“Did you look at the video yourself? Did you truly listen to those that were there?” I asked them. “If you did, you would know the truth.”
“Most of us have not. Yet. But we will.”
“Do that,” I said, already at the edge of my patience. Sheila must have been working behind Vanessa’s back for a long time to bring the majority of the board to her side, turning them against Vanessa. If they had been willing to believe Sheila’s story without even looking at the evidence, without even listening to those that were there, then I was glad that I had called.
I knew Vanessa was fiercely independent and didn’t want any help from anyone. While I supported her in all of her wishes, I couldn’t help but feel as if she was being needlessly stubborn.
Werewolves were social, pack creatures. We needed to depend on each other. And with so many working against her, Vanessa needed more people on her side.
I was determined to be her champion, even if I had to do so behind the scenes, onto her wishes.
without her knowledge, not wanting to overstep
“If you wish to continue to work within my pack, you need to release Sheila from the company,” I said. “She is an embarrassment to your company and reflects a measure of unprofessionalism that makes it difficult to continue to work with you.”

“I’m sure with some discipline
“No,” I said, my fury seething inside of me. The lies Sheila had been spreading about Vanessa, both in the form of gossip and then with the much more vicious lie of alcoholism, made my blood boil. She hadn’t just been trying to ruin Vanessa’s reputation. She had also wanted to ruin Vanessa’s life.
I wasn’t going to stand for it.
One of the board members cleared their throat. “To be fair, there are some discrepancies with Vanessa’s past. We are aware of a three year disappearance…”
“No one should be punished for their past actions, only their present behavior,” I said, making my annoyance clear by sharpening my tone. “Vanessa not only handled the situation with grace, she then went on to conduct an informative and productive meeting as if the vile actions of Sheila had not occurred. She should be recognized. Praised, even Not condemned.”
The three year period when Vanessa had disappeared, which overlapped with Laila’s own disappearance, still remained a mystery in purpose. But the past was the past, and no one should have to suffer for a life they left behind, especially when they had moved on from it as successfully as Vanessa had.
Whatever she had done, whatever happened back then, just didn’t matter anymore.
“I will not stand for any poor decision making on your part,” I said. “Sheila must go.”
Laila’s POV
I was called in front of the board rather suddenly, midday. I pushed for a serious expression, but inside I was shaking, panicking slightly that I was about to be let go.
The board favored Sheila; I had no delusions about that. I knew that, even with video evidence backing me up and two board members on my side, the majority would still want to side with her,
I moved to the meeting room where they had gathered, feeling like a woman marching to her death. The death of my career,
anyway.
I had no idea how Ava and I would survive, but we would find a way. I would never give up.
Yet, the minute I stepped in front of the board, they all lowered their heads.
“We humbly apologize to you, Vanessa. We have misjudged the situation.”
I blinked, surprised. Was this really happening?
“Given the incident that happened, and the video evidence, we have decided to let Sheila go,” said one of the board members.
“Alpha Jason’s testimony also aided in this decision,” said another.
“Jason…?” I gasped.
“Yes,” that board member continued. “He called us and was quite adamant that you not be mistreated here.”
