Jason’s POV
Many of the entrepreneurs that had been present for Vanessa’s meeting had agreed to a joint collaboration, a ground–breaking notion that was sure to make all of us a lot of money, so I traveled to Vanessa’s office to finalize my part of things.
I glanced around as Vanessa’s assistant led me to Vanessa’s office, but there was no sign of Sheila. This likely meant that the board listened to my concerns and handled the matter. I was pleased, knowing Vanessa wouldn’t have to deal with that problem anymore.
Just to be sure, I asked Claire, the assistant, “Does Sheila still work here?”
“No,” Claire replied. “She was let go for her previous behavior.”
“Good,” I said.
Claire gave me a small smile, but didn’t say anything else. I wondered if she was afraid to do so. Perhaps there was still some office politics at play here that kept her holding her tongue. Perhaps Sheila had supporters that remained on the payroll.
I didn’t know, nor did I care, so long as they kept to themselves and no longer tried to sabotage Vanessa or her work.
Claire then led me to the office. After knowing on the door, Claire opened it and led me inside.
Vanessa was standing behind her desk. “Alpha Jason. You are on time. I was just setting out the paperwork.”
I could see it ready on her desk.
“I’ve added most of the things we discussed for this join collaboration,” Vanessa said. “After you review, we should be ready to sign.”
So much hard work culminated into these stack of pages on her desk. Like this, it almost seemed like not enough for how much work we had put in. But I knew that wasn’t the case. This might just be a stack of pages now, but soon, it would be it would be a profitable endeavor that would employ many.
This was just the start of what was to come.
Moving toward the desk, I read through the entirety of the contract, noting the amendments and other changes we had discussed through emails and conference calls with the other entrepreneurs. This was a sound deal, beneficial yet fair for all sides.
Getting out my pen, I signed my name. And just like that, my part of the deal was done.

“You know,” I told her. “I mentioned before, but we really should have a celebration dinner. Are you busy after this?”
It was toward the end of the day. It made sense to go out to eat now, and to perhaps share a celebratory drink also. Things had been tense with Vanessa, which was my fault. I had been spending too much time converging her and Laila in my mind.
If I could spend more time with Vanessa in a friendly setting, perhaps I would learn more about her as an individual and finally see more differences between her and Laila’s personalities. Then, I hoped, I’d be able to finally convince my heart that they were two different people.
“Oh,” Vanessa said, her smooth businesswoman face crumpling a little, showing regret. “You’ve asked me before and I agreed, but I’m sorry… I have other plans for tonight. I wasn’t thinking…”
“It’s alright,” I said quickly, not wanting her to feel a shred of guilt over this. “Perhaps some other time.”
