But, compassion stirred in mychest and I found myself unable to continue walking. I couldn’t just abandon him when he was here like this, in such obvious need of help. Would he even be able to get home on his own like this?
It only took a moment for me to decide, then, with a sign, I pushed my way into the bar and moved to the back where Jason was sitting.
He didn’t look at me, not even as I took the seat beside him.
“I’m not looking for company,” Jason said.
“Good,” I told him. “Neither am I. I just want to make sure you aren’t trying to drink yourself to death.”
He turned then and looked at me, surprise crossing his face. The alcohol made it harder for him to hide his emotions, it seemed. “Vanessa… I didn’t know it was you. What are you doing here? Why aren’t you on your date?”
I flagged down the bartender. “Don’t worry about it.” To the bartender, I said, “My friend needs some water”
“No,” Jason said. “More whiskey. And keep it coming.”
The bartender nodded while looking at me again.
T
Water, I mouthed.
As he walked away, I returned my attention to Jason.
“You should leave me,” he said. “I’m a miserable drunk tonight.”
I could see that, but I didn’t have it in my heart to leave him like this, I knew this wasn’t the kind of man he was, and for him to fall into the trap of alcohol, he must have been pushed toward it. Something must have happened.
I settled in more firmly on my stool. “I have nowhere to be.”
“Suit yourself,” he said with a sigh.
I waited a moment for him to explain himself. When he didn’t, I pushed. “Are we drinking to anything particular? Or just for the sake of it?”
He was quiet a moment more, so long that I thought maybe he was just going to ignore me now.
Instead, after a minute, he said, “It’s Laila’s birthday. If she hadn’t died.“”
I froze. My eyes on him, I searched for any sign of dishonesty. Why would he care about my birthday at all?
As Vanessa, I wasn’t supposed to know Laila. Desperately trying to keep a grip on my emotions, I asked, “Who exactly is Laila, to you?”
“She was my adopted sister, but I… As we grew older, I… Our feelings became more complicated.”
“She became more to you?” I asked.
“We became lovers,” Jason said. He drank down another shot of whiskey. “She got pregnant.”
The bartender returned with both a glass and the whiskey bottle. As he started to refill one of Jason’s glasses, Jason told him, ” Leave the bottle.”
The bartender nodded and placed it down. It was right next to the water glass. As Jason reached out, I hoped he’d choose to sober up. Instead, he grabbed the whiskey.
I should have stopped myself from asking, too many questions, but his actions puzzled me. That he was admitting all of these things to me made me hope he would give me answers to questions I had always asked myself.
Chanter &
“What happened?” I asked.

“I was too young. I was too stupid. I wanted to please my father. My pack. How could they accept a wolfless? Brittany showed up and she seemed like the answer to everything.”
Those memories still stung, an ice blade through my heart.
“Then I hurt Laila. She ran away, and then she…ded. She and the baby.”
I didn’t know if I could believe in his pain.
Before I could help myself, I asked, “Is this pain real?”
