I would have to forget that he said he loved me.
I didn’t know if I could do that, but I would try. At the very least, I would lock that secret inside of me and never tell another soul as long as I live. Neither would I share how those words had made me feel.
For so long, I had tried to put my own feelings for Jason behind me, and for a time, I had thought myself successful in having accomplished that. All it took, apparently, was for one drunken confession from Jason to have my certainty shatter once more.
I couldn’t be dragged back into this, into him. He would only fool me again.
I’d already promised myself that I would never allow him to hurt me. I would do what was necessary to keep that promise.
“I understand,” Marcus said. “Thank you for calling me rather than alerting the news or anyone else. Where are you? I will be there with a car as soon as I can.”
I told him.
“Would you mind waiting with him a few minutes until I get there?” he said. “I won’t ask you to protect him, but just to keep an eye out.”
I knew what he meant. Getting blackout drunk in a corner bar was not a good look for any werewolf, especially an Alpha and a prominent business owner.
“I can stay for a little while,” I said. Truthfully, I didn’t have anywhere to be. I was still trying to sort out what to do with William. It cost me nothing to stay here with Jason for even a few hours more.
I didn’t want to veer
that though. Every minute I spent with Jason like this was one where my heart was in danger.
“Be there soon,” Marcus said.
With a sigh, I sat on the stool beside Jason’s again and ordered myself a glass of wine. I only just finished it when Marcus came through the door. I was surprised to see he was alone, but he likely didn’t even want the guard to see Jason as he was.
Marcus’s expression turned more and more grim the closer he got to Jason.
Leaning over, I gently shook Jason awake. “Hey, your ride is here.”
“Five more minutes,” he grumbled.
“Jason.”
“Five more minutes, Laila.”
I paled.
If Marcus heard, he didn’t react. “Alpha Jason. I have the car. It’s time to go.”
Finally, Jason grumbled and groaned. “Fine.”
Marcus quickly settled Jason’s tab, then, with one of us on each side of Jason, we started coaxing him toward the door. Fortunately, even drunk, he was still capable of walking. He was so strong and heavy with muscle, I didn’t know how we would have carried him otherwise.
The car wasn’t far, parked along the street. Marcus opened the back door and Jason crawled inside, immediately falling asleep across the seats.

With the door closed, sealing Jason inside, Marcus turned to me.
“I’m sorry about him,” he said.
“you don’t have to apologize.”

“I do. Because he would be mortified if he knew what he said.” Marcus sighed. “Laila has been on his mind a lot lately.”
I stilled.
