gaze stayed fixed on me, and my heart thumped faster as I stared into those intense eyes that seemed to be looking right into my soul.
And just then the scent hit me like a wave: sandalwood and the smell of the forest after heavy rainfall. I heard the howl of his wolf, and heat shot through my chest like lightning wrapping around my lungs.
My body melted under his gaze, a pull forging so suddenly and violently that my knees almost buckled.
“Mate!” The word came out in whispers, my mouth agape.
How?
Oh Moon Goddess… How is this man my mate?
I couldn’t believe it as all my senses recognised him, every part of me aching for his embrace.
But he didn’t seem to feel anything, as his face remained carved from ice, his gaze expressionless and untouched.
I was yet to develop my inner wolf, so I couldn’t tell why he doesn’t smell my pheromone and doesn’t feel this same mate bond, but at least he would feel a tug and see the spark in my eyes.
Damn!
I forgot he was a cursed Lycan, one whose wolf had lost every form of affection. He was that cruel man everyone feared because his heart was dark and cold.
After years of waiting for my mate, here he was… more like a punishment, a danger that could end my life.
“Since he doesn’t know I was his mate yet, I would hide it forever and never come across him.” I thought silently and nodded.
I straightened my spine, lifted my chin, and locked the feeling inside a steel box in me.
He wouldn’t know I felt this mate bond, and I would make sure he never noticed. I wondered why he saved me, but I knew it was of no good. Lucas doesn’t help or save anyone for free.
He stepped toward me slowly, his boots crushing glass, each movement deliberate and heavy with power that even Raina couldn’t help flinching with every step.
Lucas stopped a breath away, close enough that if I inhaled, I’d breathe him in. Close enough

that my body was clawing and aching for his touch because of the mate bond.
But I stood firm. Unmoved.
His eyes flicked over me, not in lust or interest, but like he was having an analysis. A ruler evaluating a puzzle he wasn’t sure about yet.

Then his gaze dropped to my arm, where blood dripped down my sleeve, and his nostrils flared subtly.
And suddenly the cold in his eyes sharpened into something else, like recognition, and it was then I remembered I had a special blood I was hiding.
“Your blood…” he said, voice deep enough to freeze bone. “It doesn’t smell like any Beta line or normal wolf.”
My pulse hammered as he stepped closer, invading the little space between us, and my body couldn’t restrain when his hand lifted my wrist gently but firmly.
Heat shot up my arm at the contact, and sparks exploded under my skin so that I almost gasped, but he didn’t react.
His thumb brushed the smear of my blood as he observed the shine of it, the way it glowed faintly under the streetlights.
“Are you in any way in the Silver Veil organisation?” he asked without looking at me.
“No.” I replied so fast, hoping my voice wasn’t giving me away.
“Have you run any test that requires your blood in any hospital or…”
“No.” I responded again, swallowing hard as I cast a glance at Kieran, who gave me an approving nod.
“Your blood seems like a mutation?” he murmured. “No… I don’t think so.” He narrowed his eyes. “Not a mutation, but there is something special about it.”
Finally, I pulled my arm from his hold, and he let me without a struggle.
A faint smirk ghosted across his lips, like he enjoyed the resistance. “You were ambushed,” he said. “Someone rammed your car intentionally before the rogues came and attacked you.”
“I figured. Why were you here?” I asked.
He tilted his head slightly. “Because someone tried to kill you.”
“And how did you know? Were you following me? Thank you, though, but I am shocked that
