While others queued, whispered, and waited, I only paid the fees to me and Raina, and we received our student tag in silence. The clerk handed me the documents with practiced courtesy, but I noticed the way her eyes flicked toward the crowd behind me.
“You’re extremely fortunate,” she said quietly, lowering her voice. “The Beta family submitted a formal request to have your admission denied. Without this card… you wouldn’t be standing here.”
For a moment, I couldn’t even smile.
How much hatred did it take to sabotage your own daughter’s future?
I thanked her and stepped aside, forcing my shoulders back. If they wanted me gone so badly, then surviving here would be my loudest answer.
Raina heard everything. Her fingers curled tightly around mine, as if she might drag me out of the building and never look back. “They’re evil,” she whispered, fury trembling beneath her words.
I squeezed her hand. “This is nothing compared to what it was like living with them.”
Her eyes burned as she glanced at Lydia, who still wore that delicate, harmless expression like a mask stitched into her skin.
“I think their punishment already started,” I added softly. “Prince Daren rejecting her must have shattered every fantasy they built.”
That finally made Raina laugh, sharp and relieved.
Outside, Kieran lingered by the doors, clearly unhappy he couldn’t follow us inside the school building as he wasn’t a student.
“Call me if anything happens,” he said. “If they try something-”
“What can they do?” I interrupted with a small smile. “Spread lies? That’s their specialty. But they won’t touch me.”
He didn’t look convinced. “It still hurts, hearing them speak to you like that.”
“It hurts because they’re my brothers,” I admitted. “Not because they matter anymore.”
He nodded slowly. “They’ll regret it.”

Then he pulled Raina and me into a brief hug and stepped away.
By the time registration for every student ended, it was past three. The senior students were gathered into a wide hall that felt far smaller than it should have because of the too many eyes fixed on me.
Even my seat was on the same row as Lance, Lydia, and Jake as if nature wanted to ruin my day at every minute.
Whispers followed me like a shadow as everyone knew I’d cut ties with my family. My Beta scent had changed also. What they didn’t understand was how I’d paid the fees.
Lance was the first to speak. “Does this academy suddenly offer charity placements?”
His voice carried effortlessly and since the proprietor hadn’t arrived yet, he knew it was the time to pick up on me.
“I’m curious too,” someone murmured behind us.
“How did she afford it?” another whispered.
Jake didn’t bother lowering his voice. “Yeah. What did you do to get that kind of money?”
The room went still.
Raina stood abruptly. “Please stop,” she begged in frustration. “Fiona’s been through enough. If she’s here, it’s because she paid and wants a fresh start, so she owes no one an explanation.”
Lance turned on her, eyes sharp and warning. “Mind your place.”
I could tell by the way his posture shifted that he was used to authority. Used to people backing down when he talk.
Lydia chose that moment to speak.
“If life feels unbearable, Fiona,” she said gently, loud enough for everyone to hear, “you can apologise to our parents. You’re still the real Beta daughter. Once you apologise, they’ll forgive you. You don’t need to disgrace yourself for money. If I’m the problem to you, I’ll step aside and leave everything behind.”
Silence swallowed the room as she let tears fall slowly, carefully. Every drop landed exactly where she wanted it to.
Sympathy bloomed around us like rot and Lance immediately pulled her close. “Don’t say that. Lydia, you’re the only daughter I acknowledge. I’ll never accept anyone else. Especially not someone who’s brought nothing but shame to our name.”
