The Beta’s Rejected Daughter
Chapter 45
Lydia’s POV
Finish
Everyone was talking, and that was the first thing I noticed the moment I slipped into the hallway outsid Fiona’s classroom.
The air was thick with voices overlapping whispers, sharp murmurs, and excitement laced with fear. Students crowded the walls, their scents clashing, nerves making the hallway feel cramped.
And every sentence, every single one, had her name in it.
Whether Fiona would survive the trial or not. They kept gossiping and murmuring among themselves.
‘Do you think she’ll actually make it out?”
‘Maybe.”
‘I heard the new professor brought in a real beast. Not a simulation. A feral one.”
My breath caught.
‘And now she’s with the Jensons. Maybe Damon trained her a bit.”
That made my fingers curl into my palms because how do they believe she is back with the family? Who started that rumour?
The hush talks continued. “Yeah. Damon’s the only one who ever cleared Professor Manning’s old trial. And look at Fiona now, walking around like she’s fearless. She must think she’s special.”
‘She’s insane. Quiet and calm one minute, then boom she turns out to be the real Jenson daughter who can do what her brother did. From nothing to everything.”
My jaw tightened as I fumed inwardly.
“I saw Damon and Lydia riding to campus together this morning. Didn’t see Fiona with them but she is driving a more expensive car. What do you think that means?“\
“What else? The fake daughter Lydia is becoming weaker and the real one’s back, Guess she is getting replaced?”
Laughter broke’out–sharp and cruel, as none of them noticed me. I had covered my scent and had a hoodie on because I wanted to secretly watch Fiona fail.
I stayed hidden in the corner, my back pressed against the cold stone wall. My wolf snarled low in my chest, fury burning my throat as my face heated painfully.
Fake daughter?
Replaced?
They must be stupid

I am the Jensons‘ daughter.
I’ve always been, and I always will be.

No whispers, no headlines and no Fiona gets to take that Beta crown from me.
The one who’ll be pushed out isn’t me but her.
But If it was those days she stayed with us, weak and obedient, I wouldn’t be bothered. Fiona stepping into a challenge like this would’ve been nothing more than arrogance and her trying to play brave because I would be certain she would fail woefully.
Even Damon had barely survived this trial so she would have no chance against a beast?
But lately… many thing about her had changed.
The way she carried herself. The way wolves instinctively made space for her and how her scent no longe smelt like fear.
That was why, the moment I heard about the trial, my feet carried me here without thinking.
“Please… please fail, Fiona.” I seethed to myself, knowing if she succeeded, they’d compare us.
And I couldn’t–wouldn’t–bear that humiliation.
Just then the classroom door burst open and Raina stumbled out.
Her clothes were torn at the shoulder, fabric ripped by claws. A thin line of blood streaked down her arm. Her breathing was uneven, and her wolf was clearly shaken–hackles still raised beneath her skin.
Students rushed her instantly.
“Well?” someone asked urgently. “What happened in there?”
Raina shook her head, wincing. “I’m out,” she said hoarsely. “I couldn’t last. The beast’s aura alone almost crushed my wolf. I barely escaped.”
Gasps ripped through the hallway, and even I stiffened.
Raina was one of the strongest wolves in high school, which made her Fiona’s friend. She had sharp instincts and fast reflexes and was always in control.
If she’d come out wounded and rattled, then whatever Fiona was facing inside wasn’t just dangerous; it was deadly.
“Then Fiona is finished.” One student sighed, and they continued gossiping.
“Yeah. There’s no way she lasts the full hour.”
“That beast doesn’t play. If it were easy, Damon wouldn’t still be the only one who ever passed a combat trial like this.”
