FLASHACK: 6 YEARS AGO
Dina
I waited, my heart full of anticipation.
Today was the day. I worked so hard for this and now it was here.
“And the student receiving the award for Valedictorian is…Dina Summers.”
Applauds filled the room. I couldn't stop smiling as I walked up to the stage, receiving the medal and murmurs of congratulations from the board. Tears filled my eyes.
I’d done it. My mother would be so proud.
She wasn’t here but I knew how much she wanted to be and it was enough. she was bogged down with work enough with her demanding shifts, but it didn’t change my joy.
I smiled at the medal. I would show it to her and she was going to be happy. But first, I had something else to do.
Immediately the graduation ceremony was over, I rushed out of the school hall, aiming for my locker. There were still a few last minute things I haven't emptied out. I was already itching to go home where she would be waiting for me.
Other students filtered out of the hall, but I paid them no mind, pulling out my leftover books and stationery from the locker.
I should have paid attention.
The moment I turned around, I was pushed to the ground.
“Oops,” a voice called out, not sounding sorry. My heart fell as I realized who it was.
Looking up I met their faces, Brittany and Rose and their boyfriend.
And in the center of it was Luther.
He leaned down and to my horror, held my medal.
“Did you see how she was on stage? She looked so happy over a simple medal. You know this isn’t even real gold right?” he snickered, danfling it at everyone. Anger filled me as I stood up.
“Give it back!” I struggled to reach him but the slew of people pushed me back.
“Catch!” He threw it to his other friend, making me spin around. I reached the boy only for him to throw it back, making me run back and forth.
“Stop it!” I cried out in frustration, glaring at Luther who held the medal. He looked around and I did the same to my horror.
All eyes were on us. The familiar rush of humiliation that came when it came to him rose in my chest.
From the moment I stepped into the school, he'd never failed to torment me.
Why couldn't he leave me alone just this once?
As I reached out for it he only laughed, pushing me away.
“What does it matter that you got this shiny badge? So what if you're valedictorian? It doesn’t change who you are,” he smirked
“A good for nothing, charity case.”
He slammed it on the floor, leaving me gaping.
The medal had cracked, leaving in two pieces.
The one achievement I had worked hard for all these years. The one I did just to see my mother smile. It was gone. Broken.
Tears filled my eyes. I bit my lip to stop it from falling but it was no use.
“Look at her.” giggles came from behind me. He and his crew were standing there victoriously, Brittany and Rose smirking. And he…he was smirking.
Everyone else was watching but they didn't make a move to stop him.
Of course. Who would touch Rutledge High’s darling? Son of their benefactor.
“Screw you Luther!” I screamed, the laughter around me made more tears stream down my eyes.
“I wouldn’t dare, even if you begged me, charity case.” he smirked.
It was the last blow. In the face of the laughter around me, I cracked my jaw. I pushed him away, slipping out of the crowd.
I ran into the nearest bathroom, locking the door behind me before the sob broke out of my throat. My knees were too weak to hold myself up anymore and I collapsed, uncaring of the rumpled dress and gown holding the broken medal.
Luther freaking Kane. He always, always, ruined everything.
If I wasn’t holding the cardboard box of my belongings, I would have slapped him. but I couldn’t do that without embarrassing myself.
I tore my wrist away, stumbling back quickly.
“I’d rather get hit by a car,” I spat out frostily, glaring at him,
“Leave me the hell alone.”
Even after I entered the nearest taxi, his arrogant smirk followed me all the way home.
…
“She's stable for now, but the collapse could happen at any time the longer we hold in the surgery-”
“I understand doctor, thank you.” I ended the call before he could finish, dropping my phone to gather myself.
What was I going to do? I'd lost my job and my mother was in the hospital. There were bills to pay and so many debts.
I closed my eyes in determination. All I could do now was move forward.
I need a job, and fast.
Thanks to my now free day, I spent my time online, applying for multiple jobs. There was no time to spend in depression. Continuously applying for every single place nonstop, I spent the entire day at my desk.
I didn't know when I fell asleep.
I woke up deep in the night, my stomach grumbling for food. Rubbing my eyes free of lethargy, I was about to stand up when I spotted a message on my screen.
‘Impossible,’ I thought of at first , rubbing my eyes to make sure I wasn’t seeing things. Itw as an email. An email for a job offer. Nobody, no company had ever responded this fast before.
I clicked the message to make sure I wasn’t seeing things.
‘Dear, Dina Summers,
Plaris Cooperation has seen you credentials and has offered to give you…’
My heart stopped.
