Dina
“I'm not too sure about this. what if this is just a hoax?” I asked through the phone, “I don’t want to embarrass myself.”
“Was there any indication that the employment offer was a scam?” Keena, my best and only friend asked,
The answer was no. I checked every scam search possible, searching everything on the company but everything was legitimate down to the email. But that was what made it even more suspicious.
First of all was the fact that I hadn’t applied for the company. I had spent that day in a mad haze, sending my resume to every opportunity I'd seen, but none of them were that company.
Which brought me to the second problem; it was Plaris Cooperation, one of the biggest corporations in the city, gaining multi-billionaire status in the industry in less than a decade which was a feat in itself. They were on the status of bigshots within the industry and were very picky. They were the type to have high standards for their employees, accepting genius prodigy’s or masters, not a former office worker with a state college bachelor’s degree.
Even more was the position I was offered, the secretary of the mysterious CEO? It sounded like a pipe dream.
“Then it's better if you check it. better to see how it is than to give up entirely,” Keena said, I sighed through the phone.
“Thanks babe.” I said.
“Call me anytime D. Tell me how it goes,” she said before the call ended.
She was right. I had to take this chance. It wasn’t like I had any options and this was by far the biggest most impossible opportunity I had.
I sighed, sliding my hands on my well pressed shirt before looking up at the building headquarters. Filled with determination, I stepped inside.
“I have an appointment,” I told the secretary. She nodded, checking her desktop and my chest tightened.
If it was fake, I'd have embarrassed myself here. Should I even have come?
“Miss Summers?” I nodded, my heart skipping a beat.
“The CEO is expecting you. follow me.” the woman smiles, leading me.
My heart lifted. This wasn’t a scam. It was real.
My nerves kept sparking as I moved closer, my heart hammering in my ears as we reached the highest floor of the office.
“Please,” she smiled, gesturing to an office. I nodded, forcing a shaky smile.
This was it.
I knocked and opened the door, my heart racing. When I entered however, my blood turned cold.
“Wha…” I couldn’t speak any more, completely gaping at the familiar face.
Luther smirked, “Long time no see, Miss Summers.”
Were it not for my grip on the door I was sure I would’ve collapsed right then and there. closing the door behind me, I sucked in a breath, something else simmering in my belly.
‘Can I?’ a single thought stopped me from moving forward.
I closed my eyes, thinking about my mother, sick in the hospital. The doctor’s words about her surgery. The debts upon debts piled up.
Could I really make it on my own?
I forced the sob down, shutting my eyes tightly as my heart sank. No. I couldn’t.
Even if I got another job, there was none that could pay as much as this one even if I worked like a dog throughout.
I was going to have to make a deal with the devil.
Stepping out of the bathroom. I gripped my files beside me, walking back to his office. It felt more like I was entering the gallows.
He looked unfazed when I reentered his office, like he'd expected me to come back.
“Thank you for your generous offer. I accept the job.” I said, biting my tongue from saying anything else.
His lips lifted into a familiar smirk.
“Now, was that so hard?”
