I don’t wait. I pull out my phone again and scroll to a number, before I press call.

It rings twice before it’s picked up.

“Noah,” the voice on the other end says, calm and steady.

“Uncle Reaper,” I reply. “I need your help.”

There’s a brief silence, and I can almost picture him on the other end, already assessing the situation.

“What kind of help?” he asks.

“I need information,” I say. “Off the books. I need eyes everywhere. Anything unusual—movements, transactions, names.”

“You know what this means, right?” he asks, his voice gruff.

Uncle Reaper used to be King of underground businesses. Hell, he was even in the FBI most wanted list a few times, but that was before he decided to change.

He fell in love with Aunt Connie, but she wasn’t the only reason he decided to turn his life around. Iris is his biological niece… He knew that as long as he was in the business, Aunt Connie and Iris would always be in danger, so he legalized his business and left the life of crime behind.

“Yes, I know” I answer, “But at this point I don’t give a fuck what I have to do as long as I get my daughter back.”

Just because he legalized his business doesn’t mean that he doesn’t still have contacts underground.

“I’ll make some calls,” he says finally. “If there’s something to find, we’ll find it.”

“I appreciate it.”

The line goes quiet for a second longer before he responds, “Hang in there, Noah, we’ll find her… I’ll be in touch.”

When the call ends, I lower the phone, exhaling slowly, but the pressure in my chest doesn’t ease. If anything, it builds to the point it feels hard to breathe. Like someone has a fist wrapped around my lungs.

Slowly exhaling, I enter my house after what feels like forever. I know I’ve been neglecting the twins, but I can’t focus on anything else. Not until their sister is found.
