Once their laughter faded, Zachary gently brushed his thumb across the back of her hand.
"There’s no need to rush anything," he said more seriously. "We have plenty of time. We’ll wait until your hand heals completely."
Sienna looked into his eyes and saw nothing but patience and affection.
She nodded. "Okay."
Then, with a mischievous smile, she tugged gently on his hand. "Come with me."
He allowed her to lead him toward the bathroom, though his expression gradually became cautious.
When they reached the doorway, he narrowed his eyes at her suspiciously.
"Mrs. Sterling," he said, trying to sound stern despite the smile tugging at his lips, "don’t tell me you’re trying to seduce your husband."
Sienna looked at him innocently. "I’m doing no such thing."
"Really?"
"Really."
She lifted her injured hand as evidence.
"I genuinely need your help. Dr. Scott specifically told me not to let the bandage get wet, and if I ignore his instructions, he’ll probably scold both of us."
Zachary raised an eyebrow. "Both of us?"
"Of course." She smiled sweetly. "You’re my husband now. If I get in trouble, you’re automatically my accomplice."
He laughed again, the last trace of worry finally disappearing from his face. "I see how this marriage is going to be."
"You’ve realized it already?"
"I have."
"And?"
He intertwined his fingers with hers and smiled warmly. "I don’t mind. Not even a bit."
Still smiling, he squeezed her hand gently and followed her into the bathroom, happy to help his wife in the simplest way he could.
...
Zachary had barely slept.
The entire night, he had struggled to resist the urge to touch her, reminding himself again and again that her injured hand needed time to heal. Just as he had finally drifted into a deep sleep, the shrill sound of an alarm echoed through the bedroom, shattering the peaceful silence of the morning.
He let out a long sigh and slowly opened his eyes, staring at the ceiling above him.
"Who on earth set an alarm in my room...?" he muttered in a hoarse voice before suddenly remembering something.
A smile slowly appeared on his face.
He lowered his gaze and found Sienna sleeping peacefully beside him. She had somehow turned toward him during the night, using his arm as her pillow while resting comfortably against his side.
For a moment, he simply watched her sleep.
Her hair had fallen across her forehead, and he instinctively lifted his free hand to brush it away. However, when he noticed her flinch slightly in her sleep, he stopped himself, unwilling to disturb her.
The alarm continued ringing.
Turning his head, Zachary spotted Sienna’s phone on the bedside table. Since it was on her side of the bed, he carefully stretched across, trying to reach it without waking her.
Before his fingers could touch the phone, Sienna suddenly stirred.
"Ugh..." she groaned sleepily. "Who the hell set the alarm...?"
Her complaint made Zachary chuckle.
"My wife," he said with a smile, "did you already forget your own ringtone?"
She didn’t answer.
Her eyes remained tightly closed as though she had no intention of waking up. Instead, she shifted closer, unconsciously snuggling against him until her head rested comfortably on his chest.
The movement made Zachary freeze.
He closed his eyes and took a slow, steady breath.
’Calm, man...’
Sienna tried to free herself again, but Zachary held her firmly, smiling like someone thoroughly enjoying the situation.
After another unsuccessful attempt, she sighed dramatically.
"You know," she said, looking at him helplessly, "you’re much stronger in the morning."
"I’ll take that as a compliment."
"It wasn’t one."
"I know."
His calm answer made her laugh despite herself.
Finally, she gave up struggling.
"I promised our son I’d be in his room before he woke up."
At those words, Zachary’s playful expression softened. He released her enough to glance at the digital clock on the bedside table.
"He’ll probably wake up in another fifteen minutes," he said before looking back at her. "What happened?"
Now able to sit up, Sienna adjusted her hair before quietly telling him about the previous night. She explained how Skylar had refused to sleep because he was afraid she would disappear while he was dreaming.
And she told him how tightly he had held her hand and how relieved he had been after she promised she would still be there when he woke up.
As she spoke, her voice gradually became softer.
"I feel so bad," she admitted quietly. "He was really scared I’d leave."
The sadness in her eyes was impossible to miss. Zachary knew exactly what she was thinking. For six years, Skylar had grown up without his mother, and even though he didn’t yet know the whole truth, he had already become deeply attached to Sienna.
Seeing her on the verge of tears, Zachary immediately got out of bed. He sat on the edge of the mattress and gently smiled at her. "Then let’s get ready."
She looked up.
"We’ll go wake him together." His calm reassurance eased the heaviness in her heart.
She nodded with a spring-like smile.
