As the villagers talked, something suddenly clicked in Anastasia’s mind, leaving her with a chill in her chest.
She grabbed her umbrella, told Grandma Shawna she’d be back soon, and hurried off toward the village entrance.
The narrow country road was packed—people crowded both sides, even standing along the muddy ridges between fields.
The police showed up quickly. No one seemed to know who had called them.
From a distance, Anastasia spotted the black car. Her heart lurched—she knew it instantly. It was the company car. She’d just sent Kim off in it. No way... Could the victim really be—
She shook her head, refusing to believe it. It was all too sudden, too unreal.
She pushed through the crowd. “Excuse me, please let me through!”
She squeezed her way in and saw officers lifting Kim’s body onto a stretcher.
“Kim…” Anastasia’s voice broke. They’d only just parted, and now, just like that, he was gone.
The lead officer heard her and came over. “Do you know the deceased?”
“Yes. He’s my employee,” she stammered. “He came here with me. I sent him back just a bit ago—it’s barely been twenty minutes. How did he die?”
“The cause of death isn’t clear yet. The medical examiner will have to confirm,” the officer replied. “We’ll need you to come with us and help with the investigation.”
As the boss, Anastasia knew she was responsible. She had to figure out what had happened. She followed them to the small-town police station.
She told the officers everything: why she and Kim had come out here, and how she’d sent him back first. Who could have imagined something like this would happen?
While she was still being questioned, Herman arrived.
“Hey, honey.” He came to her side, worry etched across his face. He didn’t know all the details, just that someone was dead and Anastasia was caught up in it.
“I’m here now,” Herman said quietly, taking her cold hand in his. He turned to the officers. “Hello, I’m Herman, her husband. If you need anything, you can talk to me too.”
At the sound of his name, the officers blinked in surprise. “Wait—you’re Herman Salstrom? From Elysian Technologies?”
Herman nodded. “That’s right.”
Big names didn’t show up in places like this often; the cops looked a little flustered.

The readers' comments on the novel: The Bond Between Us (Anastasia and Herman)
Author pls Pls don't separate Ana and Herman once again because of Sandy. There must be an ending to Ana's sufferings!...
Yes yes yes!!! Thank you!!!...
How comes the twists are becoming uninteresting and unrealistic? Readers will prefer cleaner straight happy endings. Please don't go far beyond otherwise readers will lose interest. Time to end the story like we want it to be....
Please give us a happy ending for Anastasia and Herman with Pattie recognized as Herman's daughter, thank you!!!...
