Third Person’s POV

The vibe at the winter camp was actually amazing,Melanie said. As she recalled the bonfire from the night before, her eyes softened with a warmth Archer hadn’t seen in a long timea spark that had been missing for years. We had snowball fights, built snowmen, played hideandseekeveryone had a blast. There’s a sense of freedom out there that you just can’t find in the city.

She was telling the truth.

By that mountain fire, when she briefly forgot she was Archer’s neglected mate, she had finally felt that unrestrained freedom an Alpha is supposed to have. 1

Archer’s hand, which had been flipping through a newspaper, went rigid.

He stared at her, his dark eyes filled with a deep, cold scrutiny.

This feeling of things slipping out of his control made the Alpha, who was used to being worshipped, feel a sudden, inexplicable restlessness.

Trista, hearing all this, felt a flash of longing followed by an even bigger wave of anger. Not only did her mommy not come home to beg for forgiveness, but she’d gone off to do something so fun without her! 1

Hmph!Trista stomped her foot, grabbed her backpack, and bolted toward the stairs.

Melanie’s brow furrowed, but before she could say a word, Archer’s voice cut through the hall. It wasn’t loud, but it had a bone- chilling weight to it.

Trista. Get back here.

It was a targeted display of Alpha aura.

Even though Archer tried his best to keep the pressure from hitting Melanie, the air in the room became so tight you could hear a pin drop.

Trista’s small body froze on the landing.

A werewolf pup’s instinctive fear of the pack leader made her immediately drop the attitude. Her face went pale, and her rebellion was instantly crushed by his sheer presence.

She bit her lip, looked down at her feet, and slowly dragged her backpack back down the stairs.

She didn’t dare look Archer in the eye, but she still refused to go to Melanie. Instead, she grabbed the corner of Archer’s coat, her eyes red as she pleaded, Daddy, come with us to the Red Rose Packplease?

Archer didn’t look at Melanie. He just gave Trista’s nose a small, affectionate flick, his voice steady as ever. Daddy has work. Be a good girl and listen to your mother. Go on.

Okay,Trista mumbled. She shot a sideways glance at Melanie.

As she reached her mother’s side, she reached out her tiny hand and hooked her finger around Melanie’s. It was her way of calling a truce.

Melanie took her hand and led her out the door.

Even if she had been keeping to herself lately, Melanie was still the pack’s Luma; Shannon bowed respectfully, watching them

leave.

When they arrived at the Red Rose territory, Moira had already been there for a while.

Seeing only them two walk in, Moira’s face darkened instantly. Where’s Archer? Busy with work again?

Yeah,Melanie replied flatly.

Moira huffed, pulling out her phone to give him a piece of her mind.

But Monica, who knew the severance was coming, stepped in. In her eyes, since the relationship was over, there was no point in forcing Archer to show up.

She stopped Moira, saying, He’s busy. Don’t force him.

Inside, Trista ran upstairs to play video games with Lucas while Melanie stayed with the elders.

Moira was gushing over two of Monica’s new paintings.

What about Archer?Moira asked after a while. He didn’t come emptyhanded, did he?

He didn’t,Monica said. Her expression cooled slightly at the mention of Archer, but she stayed honest. The emerald jewelry set he sent is toptier.

Moira finally smiled. That’s more like it. At least he listens to me sometimes.

Melanie sat to the side, listening in silence.

She knew that no matter how expensive the gifts were, they were just Archer’s way of checking a box to keep the elders happy.

In the afternoon, the two grandmothers had tea in the courtyard.

Monica looked over at the empty mansion across the way and made small talk. It’s strange. That house was being renovated 24 17 just a while ago, like the owner was desperate to move in. Then, a few days ago, it just stopped. All the workers vanished.
