Chapter 119
Third Person’s POV
Moira offered her a piece of candy to cut the bitterness, but Melanie didn’t take it.
Seeing that she truly had no appetite, Moira headed downstairs to dinner.
About forty minutes later, Moira came back up with Trista. Both of them looked annoyed.
Moira grumbled, “It’s this late and Archer is actually going back to the office? The man is a total workaholic!”
Melanie had been so lost in her book she hadn’t even noticed the sound of a car starting outside.
But she knew the truth. If Archer was heading out at this hour, it was probably because something had gone sideways with Camille’s project, and he was rushing off to play the hero and save the day.
Trista pouted, leaning her head on Melanie’s lap. “Daddy didn’t take me with him.”
Melanie stroked her daughter’s hair, her mind clear.
Of course Archer wouldn’t take her. If he showed up at Swift Tech with Trista, everyone would know he was married with a child.
He wouldn’t dream of letting his precious Camille face the scandal of being “the other woman.”
“Mommy’s still not feeling great. Go sit on the sofa, don’t press on me,” Melanie said, gently nudging Trista away. Her tone was
a little distant.
Trista blinked, looked surprised, and then obediently moved over.
Wiped out from the Severance Fever, Melanie couldn’t keep her eyes open past ten. She washed up and fell into a deep sleep early.
When she woke up the next morning, she overheard the servants whispering that Archer hadn’t come home all night.
Digby’s treatment had worked wonders; Melanie felt much lighter.
She planned to head back to Hilltop Tech for a normal work day.
Moira couldn’t stop her, so she just put her foot down. “Digby’s tonics need to be brewed a certain way. You definitely won’t do it right. You must come back to the estate tonight to drink them.”
Seeing that Moira wouldn’t let her leave unless she agreed, Melanie nodded. “Okay.”
Trista begged Melanie to drive her to school.
“I didn’t drive my car here, baby. Next time,” Melanie declined.
“Then use Daddy’s car! I’ll call him, he’ll totally say yes.” Before Melanie could stop her, Trista dialed Archer’s private number.
The call was picked up almost instantly.
“Ca-“Trista started to chirp the name happily, but her eyes locked onto Melanie’s calm, steady gaze. She choked on the word.
Uh… never mind.”
She hung up abruptly.
Trista thought she’d covered it well, but Melanie saw right through it. In that split second, the name her daughter had instinctively started to say was “Camille.”
Which meant Camille was the one answering Archer’s private cell.

Trista avoided Melanie’s eyes, looking guilty. “Mommy, you can just take me next time.”
“Sure,” Melanie said, her voice flat.
In the end, Melanie hitched a ride with Erasmus.
He’d overslept and was frantically trying to memorize some research papers in the back seat.
Melanie listened for a bit, occasionally feeding him a keyword when he got stuck.
Erasmus gave her a thumbs–up, looking impressed. “Luna Melanie, your memory is insane!”
The car stopped first at Erasmus’s school.
It was Melanie’s alma mater. Looking at the familiar gates, fragments of her past started to flicker through her mind.
But before she could get lost in thought, Erasmus hopped out and waved. “See you tonight!”
“Bye.”
The car merged back into the heavy L.A. traffic and eventually pulled up in front of the Hilltop building.
The second she walked into the office, Elmer was all over her. He reached out to pinch her cheek, his brow furrowed. “You look terrible. You sick?”
“Yeah. Had a high fever yesterday.”
“You had a fever and you still showed up to work today?”
“I’m fine now, aren’t I?” Melanie swatted his hand away and sat down at her desk.
Elmer shook his head at her “workhorse” attitude. “We’re heading over to Swift Tech in a bit to sync some data. You coming?”
