Chapter 117

Third Person’s POV

Melanie pressed her lips together and focused on her soup, ignoring him completely.

She already didn’t have much of an appetite, and having him sit there acting like this only made her chest feel tighter.

Archer leaned his head on his hand, watching her with a trace of clinical curiosity in his dark eyes. All these years, and you sti don’t even know how to pick a fight?

Melanie turned her head away, giving him a cold profile.

Archer let out a sigh, his voice carrying a hint of softness that even he didn’t seem to notice. Fine, I’ll stop teasing. Just eat.

In the severance agreement Melanie had filed, she had been crystal clear: she was walking away with nothing.

No property, no assets, not even a legal battle over Trista’s custody. She had assumed that given Archer’s selfserving nature, would have called her to sign the final papers ages ago.

Tut it had been three months since she left that agreement and moved back, and he hadn’t made a single move.

ie looked up, about to ask him about it, when a rhythmic knock at the door cut her off.

Erasmus’s voice drifted in from the hallway. Luna Melanie? I heard you weren’t feeling well. Are you doing better?

ore Melanie could answer, Archer spoke up with a dry, Come in.

The heavy wooden door wasn’t fully latched. Erasmus pushed it open and gave his older brother a respectful nod. Alpha Arche

Archer responded with a low grunt. Mhm.

Erasmus shifted his gaze to Melanie.

They didn’t spend much time together, but Melanie could sense the younger Alpha’s awkward concern. She broke the silence first. I’m feeling much better.

Erasmus scratched his head, looking a bit sheepish. Oh, wellthat’s good.

Melanie offered a small smile. Have you been away from the estate for a while?

Yeah. I missed the chef’s cooking, so I came back for a bit. Grandma told me the second I walked in that you were under the

weather.

Just then, Moira followed him in.

Seeing that Melanie looked a bit more like herself, the worry lines on her forehead finally smoothed out, The herbal soup the kitchen brewed for you is ready. Digby says the temperature is perfect. Melanie, do you want to have it here, or should I have Archer bring it up?

Melanie wasn’t hungry, but the room was so thick with Archer’s dominant Alpha pheromones she felt like she couldn’t breathe.

She didn’t want to stay in a space so heavily marked by him I’ll go downstairs and drink it,she said, standing op

Down in the dining room, Trista was nowhere to be seen. Erasmus looked around. Where’s the little squirt?

She already ate,Moira explained. She’s full right now, so we’ll have her have a few sips of her tonic later.

Melanie sat down and took the bowl from Shannon. She blew on it gently to cool it down and took small, careful sips,

Archer sat down right next to her. Almost immediately, his phone started vibrating.

Maybe he was trying to keep her from seeing the screen, because he naturally turned his body away, creating distance between them as his long fingers flew across the glass.

Melanie looked away and kept drinking her soup.

Moira couldn’t help herself and shot a look of disapproval at her grandson. What kind of business is so important you have to handle it right now? Can’t it wait until she finishes her soup?

“Just a second,Archer replied without looking up.

Melanie finished the bowl quickly. Want some more?Moira asked.

Melanie shook her head and stood up. No thanks, I’m full.

Even though Archer had been trying to hide his screen, Melanie’s sharp vision caught the name on the display as she stood:

Camille.

The chat log was long. It looked like Archer was coaching her through some complex logic for a core project.

Melanie felt a bitter flash of irony. He always claimed he was too busy to even walk his wife to her family’s territory, yet he had all the energy in the world to be another woman’s personal tutor.

Archer noticed her glance but didn’t explain. Instead, he shifted even further away.

Melanie kept her face blank, walked into the living room, and picked up a newspaper.
