“What about the rest?”
Nora and Nathan walked side by side into the elevator as they talked.
It wasn't until she went to press the floor button that Nora noticed Colin was still standing where they had left him.
She looked back at him. “Colin, aren't you coming up?”
Colin, looking as if he’d just awoken from a dream, shook his head. “I’m not going up. I have to head out again.”
Nora nodded, said, “Be back soon,” and pressed the close button.
Colin watched the elevator doors slowly shut, his expression filled with a sense of loss.
After a long moment, he turned and walked away, looking dejected.
Inside the elevator, Nora sensed that Nathan seemed to be in a good mood. She asked, puzzled, “I thought you didn't get anything out of him? Why are you so happy?”
The curve of Nathan’s lips immediately flattened.
He cleared his throat softly. “In any case, the suspect has been apprehended. Everyone worked through the night comparing all the surveillance footage. There’s no doubt that Ben is Suspect A in the rape-homicide case.”
“The only thing we don’t know is why he became like this.”
“Command’s thinking of bringing in a criminal psychologist to help.”
Criminal psychology wasn’t an obscure field of study. In recent years, it wasn’t just the public that had started paying attention to mental health; criminal investigation had also begun to focus on understanding the criminal mind.
However, it was an incredibly demanding field, and true experts—the kind who could crack a mind like Ben’s—were rare.
“Who are they thinking of bringing in?”
“Not sure yet,” Nathan said.
“This case is a classic example of a serial crime. The precinct probably wants to analyze it thoroughly and use it as a case study.”
Nora wasn't surprised.
Serial killings were rare, and a criminal like Ben—with a humble background and little education but a high criminal IQ—was certainly valuable for research.
Making it a case study would serve as a reference for everyone.
“You’ll probably be pushed into the spotlight for this one.”
