Nora was speechless.
Just as she was about to retort, "Do you own this police station?" the conference room door opened, and the others began to file in.
Nora held her breath, turning away from Nathan.
Seeing her sulk, a hint of a smile flashed in Nathan's eyes.
Once everyone had arrived, he finally spoke. "Since everyone's here, let's begin."
"I'll go first. I'm exhausted and need to rest after I report."
The people in the task force had all been working overtime to find clues.
The officer who spoke had been staring at surveillance footage nonstop, and the dark circles under his eyes were so heavy he looked like he hadn't slept in a week.
"Go ahead."
He turned on the projector and played the corresponding surveillance clips for several sensitive time stamps he had found.
"Suspicious individuals appeared at these times."
"Especially this person."
He enlarged the surveillance image so everyone could get a clear look at the figure on the screen.
"Is that... the driver who picked up a passenger in the middle of the night?"
"Yes."
"According to Aaron's statement and our questioning of the driver, he said he rarely gets fares from Sunnybrook Residences. That night, it was because he had just dropped off a passenger there, which is how he happened to be in the right place to pick up Aaron. The driver kept saying how lucky he was that he didn't have to drive back empty."
"Why doesn't he drive around Sunnybrook Residences?"
That neighborhood wasn't particularly remote.
Normally, while taxi drivers might stick to certain areas, they would surely take any fare they could get if business was slow. Why would they be picky?
Besides, taxis weren't gas-powered like they used to be. With electric cars, even a long-distance trip only cost a few cents in electricity but could earn tens of dollars. What kind of business would someone be unwilling to do?
"He said it's because he lives far away, so it's not worth it to make an empty return trip."
