The black car sped down the road.
Nora sat in the passenger seat, her fingers gripping the seatbelt tightly.
From the driver’s seat, Nathan noticed the red marks forming on her palm and frowned slightly. “Try not to worry.”
Nora had been drowning in a wave of anxiety and panic. The sudden sound of Nathan’s cool voice helped clear the fog from her mind.
“Thank you for driving me.”
When she received the call from the hospital, her first instinct had been to grab her car keys and drive there herself.
But Nathan had stopped her, saying she wasn’t in a state to drive.
He had then methodically assigned tasks to the team, taken her car keys, and said he would drive her to the hospital.
Nora had felt bad about interrupting his work, but Nathan simply said, “It’s fine,” and headed for the elevator.
She figured that they weren’t close, and he wouldn’t actually abandon his work for a team member, so she hadn’t pressed the issue.
Sure enough, when she later remembered to request time off and opened the group chat, she saw a message from their superior stating that while Nathan had officially reported for duty, he had been granted three days of leave, considering he had just transferred from out of state.
In other words, he could have just met the chief, completed his onboarding, and gone home for the day.
Instead, because of the case and now her mother, he had stayed until now.
“Don’t worry about it. We’re colleagues on the same team.”
In other words, helping each other was to be expected.
Nora tried to force a smile, but the thought of her mother made it impossible.
