Nathan’s words sent a shockwave through the colleagues in the interrogation room, and they all came pouring out.
“Nathan, are you serious?”
“Are you really marrying our Dr. Hayes?”
“So you’re the fiancé Dr. Hayes was talking about? I thought it was that rich kid who came to drop off gifts last time!”
“That rich kid was pretty great, too. Our Dr. Hayes is such a good person, and her professional skills are top-notch. She’s had a line of suitors stretching out the door and halfway across the county. This ex-boyfriend here has some real nerve, thinking Dr. Hayes can’t live without him.”
A moment ago, everyone was afraid to speak up, worried they’d just make things worse for Nora.
But seeing Nathan step forward without hesitation and declare himself Dr. Hayes’s fiancé, everyone seemed to feel emboldened and started speaking their minds.
“Exactly! He dated Dr. Hayes for seven years without ever talking about marriage, and now he’s passive-aggressively implying she’s too old and no one else will want her. How disgusting can you get? Doesn’t he know everyone turns thirty? Why didn’t he propose sooner, then? If you really want to marry a girl, would you date her for seven years and not pop the question?”
“Why would he marry Dr. Hayes? He’s already made it official with his new girlfriend.”
“Tsk, tsk, so disgusting…”
Aaron and Mia’s faces went from pale to red.
But at that moment, Aaron couldn’t care less about any of that. He took a step forward, stared intently at Nora, and asked in a trembling voice, “Nora, he’s lying, right?”
“How could you possibly be marrying him?”
“No, you wouldn’t get married at all, would you?”
“You just said all that to scare me. You want me to give in and apologize, to break up with Mia, right?”
Nora frowned. She had never expected Nathan to suddenly step up and claim to be her fiancé.
