Forced to the absolute front, Nora served as a human shield. The kidnapper kept Nolan tucked securely behind him, lining the three of them up perfectly.
A sniper's red laser dot settled dead center on the kidnapper's forehead. He didn't even flinch. Instead, as a blatant show of defiance, he pressed the barrel of his gun hard against Nora's temple.
The veins in Nora's forehead throbbed. Faced with imminent death, raw physical instinct took over. Everyone outside could clearly see her limbs trembling.
Crouched behind cover, Nathan witnessed this, and a terrifyingly dark aura erupted around him.
"Get that Devereaux here!" the kidnapper yelled, entirely unfazed, cutting off the police negotiator before they could even start. "Have the cash ready and we can talk. Otherwise, we all die together."
Nora's eyes gradually adjusted to the gloom. With her background in law enforcement, she quickly pinpointed the tactical positions of her colleagues.
The distance was too great to make out fine details, but she seized the moment while the kidnapper was barking at the negotiator, subtly tapping out a series of hand signals.
From his vantage point, Nathan's gaze was locked fiercely onto her hands. Under the harsh floodlights, her pale fingers stood out sharply. Anyone not watching her closely would have missed the micro-movements.
A tactical team member beside him caught it too, quickly decoding the message in a hushed whisper. "Dr. Hayes is saying the target is acting erratic. He has a backup plan. Play along for now. There's a blind spot at the rear of the warehouse; we can flank him from behind."
Worried they might miss it, Nora repeated the signals several times. On the final sequence, she subtly angled her finger toward the rear gap.
Since the man was facing front, the police couldn't offer any visual confirmation. Nora had no way of knowing if her message was received.
