Nathan didn't need him to speak.
He laid out the crime scene photos one by one, his tone chillingly detached. "Because she was planning to kill you."
...
Outside the interrogation room, the hallway had filled up. Members of the Special Task Force were returning to the precinct in droves. Despite the exhaustion carved into their faces after days of running down leads, their eyes burned with adrenaline. They were inches away from closing the case.
"Dr. Hayes, want a bite?"
The last detective to arrive held up a greasy takeout bag.
Assuming someone from the squad had ordered a late dinner, Nora pulled out a wrapped sandwich. "Thanks."
The detective peered into the bag, noticing it was mostly empty. He grinned. "The rest of the guys get their share?"
Nora found the question slightly odd but nodded casually. "Yeah, looks like it."
The detectives had divided up the food, leaving exactly one sandwich identical to Nora's at the bottom of the bag. Another colleague casually tossed it into Nora's lap. "This one's for the boss. Hold onto it for him, Dr. Hayes."
Caught off guard, Nora stared at the foil wrapper. "Why me?"
They could have just left it on his desk for when he finished the interrogation.
"Come on, you guys are practically married! What's his is yours! If you don't hold it, who will?"
"Hahahaha!"
The hallway erupted in good-natured laughter, leaving Nora entirely flustered. Her cheeks burned bright red.
She hadn't expected to be teased so openly by the hardened detectives. "Stop talking nonsense!" she scolded playfully, turning her back to hide her flushed face, much to their amusement.
