Having Nora call him out so bluntly was humiliating.

“Wasn’t I just thinking that if you and your mother had a hard enough life, you’d know to come back, swallow your pride, and apologize? Your mother is just too stubborn. If she hadn’t insisted on leaving back then, would you have spent so many years suffering with her?”

“Nora, what’s past is past. Let’s not bring it up again, alright?”

With Nora’s temper, she would normally have shot back with a firm “No.”

But with her mother in Leonard’s hands, Nora didn’t dare make a rash move.

“What is it you really want?”

Nora’s patience was wearing thin. “I know you’re doing this to threaten me. Let’s not beat around the bush. Name your terms, and I’ll meet them.”

“But let me make one thing clear, Leonard: you will guarantee my mother’s safety. No one is to lay a finger on her.”

“If anything happens to her, I swear I’ll take you down with me, even if it’s the last thing I do.”

Leonard heard the finality in Nora’s voice, and a sharp pain pricked his heart.

The truth was, Nora’s personality was very similar to his.

They were both ruthless—to themselves and to others.

But Nora had been raised by Grace, and under her influence, the coldness in her bones had been tempered by a sense of goodness.

She used aloofness and indifference as a shield.

In reality, breaking through that shell would only reveal a soft heart.

Leonard’s tone softened. “Let’s meet. It’s been a long time since we’ve had a meal together as father and daughter. How about we sit down tonight and have a good talk?”

“My mother—”
