The crime scene investigation was complete. Nora had planned to catch a ride back to the precinct in any available officer’s car.
But she had only taken a few steps before Nathan grabbed her arm. He tilted his head, the gesture sharp and a little bossy. “You’re riding with me.”
Nora frowned, muttering, “Don’t you usually bum rides off me?”
Since when did he have his own car?
Nathan acted as if he hadn’t heard her, walking straight to the lead police cruiser.
Nora followed close behind. They both got in, and Nathan started the engine.
The other officers, aside from those staying behind to clean up, also began to move out.
Car after car pulled away.
“Did you also come here as soon as you got the call?”
Nora remembered the man who had pulled Nathan away earlier. “Doesn’t that mean you bailed on your friend?”
Nathan’s lips thinned. “Sort of.”
“Sort of?”
What kind of answer was that?
Nora glanced at him quizzically, but Nathan’s focus was fixed on the road ahead, showing no intention of explaining.
With no other choice, Nora dropped the subject.
She opened their team’s group chat and saw that the victim’s information had already been sent.
She opened the file and froze.
“The victim is Chloe Scott. She was eighteen.”
Nathan’s expression darkened as he heard Nora softly read the words.
Just eighteen. At her age, she was just starting to blossom.
She was on the cusp of the next stage of her life.
Instead, her body had been discarded like a broken doll in this desolate, abandoned factory.
And the countless wounds on her body made it clear she had been brutally beaten before her death.
One could only imagine the agony the victim endured until her very last breath.
