Nora paused. “Are you trying to comfort me, Nathan?”
Nathan met her gaze. “Do you need comforting?”
Nora shook her head.
Nathan seemed to let out a faint chuckle. “There you have it. Nora, I hand-picked you for this task force because I have complete faith in your professional abilities.”
“You should trust me, and you should trust yourself.”
Nora’s heart skipped a beat.
She had heard similar words many times before.
But coming from Nathan, they seemed to carry a different weight, a hidden meaning.
Pressing her lips together, Nora suppressed the strange emotion rising in her chest and gave a soft “Mm.”
Nathan glanced at her. Though her face was pale and her brow was furrowed, her spirits seemed high enough. He picked up a bottle of water and offered it to her. “Water?”
Nora took it. “Thanks.”
She twisted the cap and took a sip. The cool water washed away the bitter taste in her mouth, and she felt it also cleared away some of the shadow that the young girl's tragic death had cast over her heart.
“Can you give me a hand?”
Nora looked up at the sound of his voice and saw Nathan holding out another bottle of water.
“Help me open this, thanks.”
Nora took it, twisted the cap open, and held the bottle out for him to take.
But Nathan didn’t take it. Instead, his expression was serious as he watched the traffic ahead.
Nora didn’t understand what he wanted. After waiting a moment longer and seeing he still wasn't taking it, she thought for a second, then pulled a disposable straw from her bag. She unwrapped it, stuck it in the bottle, and held it to Nathan’s lips.
Nora wasn’t sure if it was her imagination, but she felt Nathan freeze for a second when he saw the straw.
