Hearing this, Ethan laughed out loud, full of bitter self-mockery.
He tilted his head back and took another huge gulp of beer. The liquid slid down his throat, burning his eyes.
In his thirty years of life, he had never felt such crippling regret.
A regret so deep he wanted to drag his past self out and beat him senseless.
Logan walked over to him, making no attempt to hide his schadenfreude. "Seeing you like this makes me feel a whole lot better."
"I was an idiot," Ethan said, lowering his eyes.
"'Idiot' barely covers it," Logan chuckled. "But since you've finally woken up to the truth, I highly suggest you don't go tracking her down to rehash the past."
Ethan stayed silent for a long moment before speaking, his voice hoarse. "She should have told me."
Logan scoffed. "Told you, and then what? Would you have instantly cut ties with that manipulative two-faced woman? More likely, she would have shed a couple of tears, spun some excuse, and you would've just let it slide."
"Think about it. She stayed by your side for three years, giving up a brilliant future. And even then, you tossed her aside for Lily, trampling all over her genuine feelings for you, time and time again."
"What gave you the right? You just banked on the fact that she loved you."
"You gambled on her love, betting she could never leave you."
"So you acted without fear of consequences, completely blind to her pain. You used the excuse that you couldn't abandon Lily, completely forgetting who you should have been cherishing the most."
"You didn't believe someone who loved you that much would ever have the resolve to walk away."
"Ethan, no one is obligated to wait around for you forever, especially someone as heartless as you."
"So stop putting on this pathetic show every day. It's your own body. Don't be so despicable as to expect her to come back and save you."
