Silas handed the snowball back. Staring at her slightly reddened nose, he couldn't help but reach out and gently brush a snowflake from the top of her head. His fingertips grazed her hair, the subtle contact causing them both to freeze.
Alaina snapped her head up, crashing straight into his deep gaze. There was a heat swirling in his eyes she had never seen before, sending her pulse into overdrive.
She quickly took a step back, gripping the snowball tightly and looking away. "I... I'm just going to throw a few more, then I'll be done."
Acting like a little kid, she chucked the snowball as far as she could.
Then she recorded a video and sent it to Logan and Evelyn, asking if they were enjoying the snow too.
Alaina's nose was flushed red from the cold, and her eyes sparkled like sunlight shattering across the snow. She made the bitter winter feel incredibly soft.
Silas watched her without blinking, a smile spreading across his lips that he wasn't even aware of.
It wasn't until Alaina waved a freshly packed snowball at him. "Silas, look, isn't this one perfectly round?"
He slowly walked over and played along, his voice soft. "It's rounder than the one I threw."
Alaina beamed, rising onto her tiptoes to show him the snowball, completely missing the patch of thin ice beneath her feet. She slipped.
She stumbled forward, crashing directly into his outstretched arms.
Silas firmly caught her by the waist, steadying her.
Alaina had accidentally rubbed some snow onto the lapels of his coat. She immediately stood up straight and backed away.
Silas looked at her. "Let's go in and eat."
She nodded.
The next second, Silas reached out and grabbed her wrist.
Alaina let him pull her forward.
Snow fell on their shoulders, crunching softly beneath their boots, leaving two sets of footprints side by side.
A rush of heat traveled from where he held her wrist straight to her chest.
She tugged lightly, but he didn't let go, so she just let him lead the way.
