Alaina pressed her lips together, wanting to argue but finding herself entirely out of retorts.
She *was* softhearted. Otherwise, she wouldn't have snuck in at midnight to turn his heat on.
"Spit it out. Why play this game?" she asked. "Is lying to me really that entertaining?"
Silas pulled her closer, closing the last bit of distance between them.
The tip of her nose nearly brushed his, and her heartbeat hitched.
"Just pretend that I was looking for an answer too," Silas said steadily, his gaze calm and unnervingly sincere.
Her breath hitched. The last shred of her sanity screamed at her to end this conversation immediately.
"This is the last time," she warned fiercely. "No more lying."
"Deal," he agreed without hesitation.
"And no more faking sleep to trick me."
"Deal."
"And definitely no more—" She paused, her voice softening. "Treating me like an idiot."
Silas looked at her and spoke with deliberate emphasis. "You are the first woman in my life who has ever dared to hit me and physically dominate me like this. Which one of us really looks like the idiot right now?"
She tried her hardest to hold back her laughter but utterly failed.
The corners of her lips curled up before she forcefully flattened them, glaring at him with mock severity. "Who would have thought a man like you would play such petty mind games?"
Silas chuckled, wearing an expression of total surrender. "I'm sorry. It won't happen again."
The sincerity of his apology instantly melted away the last of Alaina's defenses.
"Whatever. It's fine."
She moved to roll off him, but he clamped an arm around her waist, effortlessly hauling her down to his side and caging her against his chest.
Her ears burned. She tried to wriggle away, but he held her fast.
"Stop it..." she mumbled, the fierce edge entirely gone, replaced by a soft helplessness. "I really need to go back to sleep."
