Alaina set the medicine down and said softly, "It's time for your medicine."
Valerie's eyelashes fluttered at the sound, but she didn't stop moving the beads, stubbornly continuing her silent prayers.
A second later, a violent fit of coughing seized her. Her chest heaved as she covered her mouth, her frail shoulders shaking uncontrollably. The last bit of color drained from her face.
"You need to stop!" Alaina rushed over, gently rubbing the woman's back in a soothing, urgent motion. "You're sick, exhausted, and weak. You need to lie down and rest. You can pray anytime, but your health comes first."
As the fierce coughing spell gradually subsided, Valerie gasped for air. She opened her tired eyes, her gaze both gentle and resolute, and slowly shook her head.
She raised her hand, her fingers gripping the prayer beads so tightly her knuckles turned white.
"No... I can't stop," she whispered breathlessly, pausing between each word with a sickly stubbornness. "I made a vow. I have to finish chanting. As long as I finish, Silas will be safe. This is the only thing I can do for him."
Every word she spoke was sincere, her eyes brimming with a bone-deep concern and longing for her son.
Even confined to a sickbed, barely able to take care of herself, her heart and mind were entirely consumed by Silas.
Alaina's heart skipped a beat as a complex wave of emotion surged within her.
Confusion and incomprehension tangled together, forming a tight knot in her chest.
She stared quietly at the sick, devoted woman in front of her. She simply couldn't reconcile this extreme maternal love with the mother who had stubbornly abandoned Silas, missing out on his entire childhood.
How could someone who cared this much, who constantly prayed for him and valued him above all else, have turned her back and left him all alone during the most vulnerable years of his youth?
