Alaina had to dig for more details.
The monk explained that Valerie had only spent about a year there.
Because her fixations were too extreme, the head abbot had refused to let her stay any longer.
So, it wasn't until just now, decades later, that the monk finally recognized her.
A massive shockwave ripped through Alaina's chest.
Every scene since Valerie's sudden return to the Summers Estate flashed through her mind.
Every word she had spoken, every look in her eyes...
And her supposed reasons for leaving the mountain.
Endless questions flooded in.
A profound sense of dread washed over Alaina.
She thanked the monk and distractedly retraced her steps back toward the main hall.
From a distance, she looked at Valerie, who was quietly sitting and praying. The woman's frail back looked so calm and devoted, as if she were purely focused on her faith. But looking at her now, Alaina saw nothing but layers of deception.
Suddenly, two towering figures stepped out from behind an ancient tree, firmly blocking her path.
Dressed in dark tactical gear, the men had cold, expressionless faces, effectively cutting off Alaina's route to the hall.
The man on the left gave a slight nod. His tone was polite but undeniably forceful. "Ms. Rossi, please return to your room and rest."
Confused, Alaina instinctively took a half-step back. "Who are you?"
"The mountain air is cold, and the journey was long. Please head inside. From this moment on, we are taking over the grounds." The man in black maintained his flat tone, but both of them stepped closer, sealing off her escape.
Alaina glanced around. The few monks she had seen earlier had completely vanished.
"I don't know who you are," Alaina said, clenching her fists to suppress her rising panic.
