For the next few days, Alaina had absolutely no contact with Silas.
Even though her vacation wasn't over, she went to the Security Administration alone to prepare for her new R&D assignment.
When Julian Rowe called, she was just getting ready to leave the building.
She quickly made up an excuse and hung up the phone.
But as she walked out of the Administration's entrance, she saw Julian waiting by his car.
She hesitated in embarrassment for a few seconds before walking over.
Julian smiled, his tone gentle and teasing. "What century are we in? Are we still practicing guilt by association?"
"It's not that." Alaina wanted to explain, but realized no excuse would sound right. "I'm sorry, I just really haven't wanted to talk to anyone these past few days."
"Come on, let's grab something to eat," Julian invited. "You don't have to talk or entertain me. Just eat."
Alaina nodded.
Julian took her to a popular local bistro down the street and ordered a few dishes.
Once they had filled their stomachs, he smiled and asked, "How's that? Do you feel a little better now that you've eaten?"
Alaina smiled and nodded. "Yeah, I do."
"Don't blame me for being a meddler, but consider it the price of a free meal. When do you plan on forgiving him?" Julian asked.
Alaina looked up, the light fading from her eyes. Her voice was perfectly flat. "It's not about forgiving or not forgiving. It's my own problem."
Her tone was distant, laced with a lingering sense of stubborn grievance.
Julian looked at her, offering patient guidance. "From your perspective, you absolutely have the right to be furious with him. I know exactly why you're mad."
"You're mad that he risked his life, mad that he made you terrified, and mad that he kept everything bottled up, indirectly forcing you to carry all that pressure and fear on your own."
The tension in Alaina's shoulders eased slightly as a wave of stinging tears threatened her eyes.
