Lucia stood up as well, turning to Silas. "I'm sorry, but I have to steal your bride away now."
Completely bewildered, Alaina followed Lucia upstairs.
Lucia prepared a different room for her, explaining, "According to our tradition, you can't see each other before the ceremony."
Alaina smiled, happy to respect her host's customs.
"How many days does it take to prepare for the wedding?" she asked.
Lucia explained that by the old rules, a wedding took an entire month to plan.
But knowing they didn't have that much time, the family had just been discussing whether they could hold the ceremony tomorrow.
They had to figure out if they could get everything ready in time.
The conclusion was a resounding yes; the wedding would be tomorrow.
A moment later, Lucia brought in flower petals and a long white nightgown.
She explained that the bride was supposed to bathe with petals the night before the wedding and wear the pure white gown to sleep.
Alaina followed the instructions.
After her bath, Martha came in to brush her hair.
She smiled and told Lucia that it was very similar to her own cultural traditions.
An elder would brush the bride's hair to offer blessings.
Once finished, Martha delivered a long string of well-wishes in German, which Lucia translated.
Lowering her voice, Lucia then added, "There's a hot spring cave not far from town. It's our custom for newlyweds to spend their wedding night there. Martha hopes you'll love it."
At the mention of a wedding night, Alaina couldn't stop the heat rising in her cheeks.
