"I went to the firm," Maloney replied.
Nora instantly fired back, "Aren't you on vacation? Was there an emergency?"
"No emergency." Maloney parted his lips, his tone incredibly casual. "I went to meet someone."
Following the natural rhythm of the conversation, Nora predictably asked, "Who?"
"A friend of yours," Maloney said smoothly.
Nora immediately wanted to argue.
Seraphina Sinclair was absolutely not her friend!
She bit her tongue just in time, swallowing her retort. Instead, she asked, "Which friend?"
He had been answering directly up until now, but at this specific question, Maloney started talking in circles.
Out of nowhere, he changed the subject. "Do you remember what year Alistair Sinclair died?"
Of course Nora remembered.
Her parents had arranged a childhood betrothal between her and Sebastian when she was just five. From then on, she visited Alistair at the Sinclair estate every holiday.
That tradition lasted until middle school, when Alistair died of an illness. After that, she never set foot in the Sinclair residence again.
"The second semester of seventh grade. May 5th, right at the start of summer."
Nora tilted her head at him, completely baffled. "Why are you suddenly asking about this?"
Maloney cast a fleeting glance at her. "How old was Sebastian that year?"
Nora thought for a moment.
She had been thirteen. Sebastian was ten years older than her. "He was twenty-three."
Maloney drawled lazily, "Twenty-three. What stage of life is that?"
Nora was starting to get dizzy from the interrogation.
"What stage?" she echoed blankly.
Maloney raised an eyebrow. "Think about it."
"So... you're saying Alistair might not have died from an illness? He might have been murdered over the inheritance? And the maid's daughter saw what really happened, so she was taken away?"
Suddenly, the pieces clicked into place for Nora. "Does this have something to do with the Cole family?"
Maloney nodded. "Yes. What Seraphina is digging into is far more dangerous than you can imagine. Be careful she doesn't drag you down into the mud with her."
Nora nodded slowly in realization. "So that's what you were discussing today."
Maloney tapped his fork lightly against the porcelain plate, producing a sharp clink.
"Nora," Maloney said, his voice dropping an octave. "You knew exactly who I went to see today. Why didn't you just ask me directly when you got back?"
Realizing she had slipped up, Nora choked for a second before firing back. "You led me on!"
Maloney retorted without missing a beat, "Who told you to beat around the bush?"
"How did you even know that I knew who you were meeting?" Nora had found a massive hole in his logic. "Were you tracking me?!"
Maloney looked like he was about to laugh out of pure exasperation. "Didn't you swipe your security badge when you drove into the company garage?"
Nora was stunned. "You checked the security logs?!"
