The Divorce That Brought Us Back novel Chapter 4

Maloney gave a slight nod. "Don't get up on my account. Keep talking, I'm just here for a drink."

After exchanging brief pleasantries, Jasper sat with Maloney to pour him a drink, while the rest of the group turned their attention back to the star of the night: Parker Quincy.-

Parker was already several glasses deep before Maloney even arrived. Flushed and fueled by alcohol, his emotions were running high. "I am Parker Quincy! And just because I let my secretary ride in the passenger seat, my wife wants a divorce, my mom is forcing me to apologize, and my dad is chewing me out for crossing the line!"

Working himself into a drunken frenzy, he slammed his hand against the table and shot up from his seat, shouting at the top of his lungs. "Tell me what I did wrong! Does the passenger seat have a VIP label on it? Is it written into the law that no one but the wife is allowed to sit there?"

His booming voice echoed painfully around the room.

Looking embarrassed, Jasper rushed over to intervene. He grabbed Parker's arm, dropping his voice. "Hey, Maloney is here today. Cut the drunken tantrums."

Parker acted like he hadn't heard a word. He slowly swiveled his head, his bleary eyes landing on Maloney. Slurring his words, he demanded, "Maloney, you're a married man. Would you let someone who isn't your wife ride in your passenger seat?"

To be completely honest.

Nora had never ridden in Maloney's passenger seat.

They always drove their own cars.

However, someone else absolutely had sat there.

Just as Maloney was considering how to answer, Jasper lunged forward, physically blocking Maloney from Parker's line of sight. "I'll answer that for you."

Jasper cleared his throat, raising his voice to ensure every word landed clearly. "A married man needs to act like a married man. The passenger seat is exclusively the wife's territory. Anyone else can take their ass to the back seat. And don't give me that 'car sickness' garbage. If they get carsick, call them an Uber!"

"Let me tell you, marriage is an art form. Don't brush off the little things."

Someone nearby chimed in. "I'm with Jasper on this. My wife always says the passenger seat is her throne. Women are naturally more sensitive about these things. It's a small detail, just humor her."

Seeing that not a single person was taking his side, Parker's fury skyrocketed. "She's demanding a divorce over a car seat! She wants me to apologize and fire my secretary! Is this a joke? I got married, did I lose the right to make my own damn decisions?!"

Seeing him spiral, another friend tried to soothe his ego. "Divorce is definitely an overreaction. Every couple has fights."

"Exactly. If you ask me, let her throw her fit, but whatever you do, don't apologize. If you apologize now, she'll have you on a leash for the rest of your life."

Finally hearing something he liked, Parker sneered. "I'd rather die than apologize to her."

The room erupted into overlapping voices as the guys debated the issue back and forth.
