Chapter 66 The Old Man is Grayson Hayes’ Grandfather
“Hello, what did you say? Has there been any progress with the treatment plan?”
Evelyn looked away just as her teacher called her. She quickly answered the phone.
Her mentor sounded equally excited, pride radiating from their words.
“Evelyn, I knew you could do it. Is Grayson with you?”
Evelyn turned to glance at Grayson Hayes and responded, “He’s by my side. What’s up?”
“You two need to come to my house. I’m going to introduce you to the patient. I’ve reviewed the treatment plan, and I believe it will have a significant impact.”
Evelyn’s face lit up with a smile after looking at Grayson Hayes.
“Okay, teacher, I’m on my way over now.”
After hanging up, Evelyn conveyed her mentor’s message to Grayson.
Grayson Hayes matched her delight, their eyes meeting with shared joy.
Evelyn stood up, shaking off her earlier thoughts. She said first, “Let’s head to the mentor’s place now. You don’t have work this afternoon, right?”
Grayson Hayes thought for a moment before shaking his head. “No, I’m free.”
The two left the lab side by side and made their way to their mentor’s house.
When they arrived, the mentor was waiting for them at the door and waved them over eagerly.
“Come on, let’s get in the car and talk.”
They obediently climbed into the car, where the discussion turned to the patient’s condition.
“His condition has stabilized, but after using the medication you sent last time, he reacted significantly. He’s able to stand now, but the treatment techniques of those others still need improvement. I think it would be best if you, Evelyn, could personally
attend to him.”
Evelyn nodded, but when she turned to glance at Grayson, she noticed his expression seemed off.
“Gray, what’s wrong? You look a bit unsettled.”
Grayson Hayes opened his mouth, seemingly about to speak, but their mentor cut in first.
“Okay, we can talk later. We’ve arrived.”
Although Evelyn wanted to inquire further, her mentor’s words kept her silent. She offered a reassuring pat on Grayson’s
shoulder.
“Don’t worry. We’ll succeed. Everything will be fine.”
Seeing her encouragement, Grayson Hayes let out a quiet sigh in his mind, ultimately saying nothing.
The two followed their mentor back into the villa to see the patient that needed treatment.
Many experts were already waiting there. In contrast to their previous dismissive attitude, this time, upon seeing Evelyn and Grayson Hayes, some smiles appeared, and they greeted them warmly.
“Dr. Hart, Grayson, you’re finally here.”
Their warm reception was mostly directed toward Evelyn.
After all, she had been the one to shine in front of them last time.
However, with Grayson Hayes, there was a hint of caution and respect in their demeanor, which created a sense of discomfort for Evelyn.
She found it hard to shake off a nagging feeling that something was amiss and suddenly recalled the old man’s identity from before along with Grayson’s hesitance.

Evelyn instinctively glanced at Grayson Hayes and indeed found his expression quite grim, his gaze fixed intently on the elderly
man.
With her attention already focused on Grayson Hayes, this only heightened her awareness of his unusual emotions.
Noticing his tense posture, Evelyn stepped closer to him, assuming he was just nervous.
“Don’t worry. Our research is sound. The mentor has said the patient feels much better. Just relax; he will receive excellent
care.”
Grayson Hayes’s eyes lingered on Evelyn, speech caught in his throat.
“Evelyn, I-”
Before he could finish, their mentor noticed they were still standing idle and frowned.
“Evelyn, Grayson, stop dawdling. Hurry, the surgery is about to start. Go on in.”
Evelyn nodded and grabbed Grayson’s hand, leading him quickly into the room where the elderly man was.
As they entered, Evelyn’s eyes widened in surprise; she suddenly realized that the old man on the bed bore a striking resemblance to Grayson.
Remembering Grayson’s earlier demeanor, she couldn’t help but overthink the situation.
Before she could press him for explanations, they heard the elderly man call out to Grayson.
“Grayson, come here.”
Grayson obediently responded and walked over to his grandfather, clearly stating, “Grandpa, don’t worry; you’ll be fine.”
He glanced back at Evelyn, only to find her gaze filled with complexity.
A lump formed in his throat as he sensed she might have misunderstood something.
As Grayson suspected, Evelyn had indeed picked up on something odd.
Prior to this, she had thought Grayson and the elderly man must be acquainted, but she never expected that the old man would turn out to be Grayson’s grandfather.
After the initial shock, waves of discomfort surged within her.

Having known Grayson for so long, she could understand why he might not want to reveal this on their first meeting. But now, after everything, even with the progress they had made, Grayson had hidden such an important matter from her, leaving her feeling powerless.
It felt as though Grayson didn’t trust her despite their time together, and a bittersweet smile flickered across her lips.
