Chapter 102: Poisoned Words
KIERYGAN’S POV
“Having a council meeting without me?”

I didn’t even bother to lift my gaze from the table. “I don’t wait for anyone,” I said, my tone dry as
bone. “Especially for someone we didn’t know was coming back.”
I didn’t offer her a seat, but that didn’t stop her. Mirael glided to her usual place at my right and sat as if she still belonged there. My jaw tightened. I made a mental note to change the seating
arrangement soon. Permanently.
The meeting dragged on longer than I’d intended. I hadn’t forgotten my promise to take Eirlys outside, but security couldn’t be rushed-not when her life was at stake. I pressed on, covering
every detail, every contingency.
Mirael sat in silence the entire time, offering nothing. She only listened, that faint, knowing smirk
never leaving her lips.
I was just about to bring the meeting to a close when a knock sounded at the door.
“Enter,” I called.
A guard stepped in, inclining his head before speaking. “Your Majesty, news from the mines in Mt. Kyros. Rogues attempted to breach the Pyraethyst reserves. Nothing was taken, but I thought it best to inform you immediately.”
I gave a curt nod. “Thank you. Carry on.”
He bowed and left the room. Mirael leaned forward her voice sharpened with urgency. “It’s him. Malric. He’s finally making a move. We should strike first, before he gains the upper hand.”
I didn’t answer. My gaze slid to Orryx, Callum, and Evander. Even Ashteryn let out a scoff. We didn’t need to speak. The mined Pyraethyst was already secured in the most fortified vault in the kingdom, far beyond a rogue’s grasp. This “attack” was nothing but an irritation.
Mirael clearly didn’t enjoy being ignored. “We’re downplaying threats now?” she said, leaning back with a sneer. “We should be putting Eirlys’ light to proper use. Turn them into weapons.”
Of course. She would never pass up a chance to bring up Eirlys and the destruction her light could cause. My tongue was already poised with something sharp, but Callum caught my eye and gave a small shake of his head-a warning not to take the bait. The longer I indulged her, the longer this meeting would drag.
But Mirael wasn’t finished.
“Wasn’t that the plan from the start?” she drawled, her voice laced with venom. “Oh, wait. No. The

original plan was to kill her on sight, wasn’t it?” Her gaze swept the table, taunting. “And instead, you came up with something better. You brought her here… paraded her around to gain allies, made her feel safe, won her trust.”
She paused, lips curling into a slow, malicious smile. “You’ve gotten more than her trust, I presume.
Leaning in, her voice dropped to a mocking purr. “Surely, you could just sweet-talk her into handing over some of that precious light.”
I felt my blood ignite, vision narrowing until all I saw was red. My talons burst free before I could think. In a blink, Mirael was slammed against the wall, my claws curling around her throat.
“You will never speak of Eirlys like that again,” I growled, my voice low and razor-edged. “Better yet,
do not even breathe her name. Do you understand?
For a heartbeat, I thought I saw satisfaction flicker in her eyes, as though she’d achieved some private victory. I tightened my grip until her face darkened to violet.
“I-” she choked out, “I understand.”
I didn’t loosen my grip. “The next time your filthy mouth utters rubbish about Eirlys,” I said, each word slow and deliberate, “you’re out of this council. Or maybe I’ll banish you from the kingdom
entirely.”
Mirael’s voice failed her; she gave a shallow nod instead, coughing out a strangled sound before I finally released her. She crumpled to the floor with a graceless thud. No one moved to help her.
I turned my gaze on the others at the table. “Let me be clear,” I said, my tone carrying the weight of a threat. “No one uses her. No one touches her. She’s mine.”
They all nodded in stiff silence as I turned to leave, only for a sudden weight to catch at my left
boot.
I frowned and looked down. Nibbles was gnawing at the hem of my trousers. I scooped him up, tiny paws scrabbling at my chest. “What are you doing here, little beast?”
My gaze swept the room. “Where’s Eirlys?”
The answer struck before the words were even gone. A cold weight settled in my gut. She had
been here. She’d heard every venom-laced word Mirael spewed.

Panic gripped me before I realized I was moving. I left the meeting chamber without a single word,
my stride breaking into something just shy of a run
The corridor outside was empty. No flash of silver hair, no trace of her.
I went straight to our wing, checked her room. It was empty. Her chamber was still, silent,

untouched.

I reached through the bond, desperate for that fam liar spark, but found nothing. The thread between us felt slack, severed. The hollow in my chest tightened like a vise.
“Where are you?” I muttered, voice low and rough.
I stormed outside, Nibbles wriggling in my arms. “Stay still,” I growled, tightening my grip. “I know you want to see Eirlys. So do I.”
Ahead, Evander, Callum, Orryx, Ulyanna, and Ashteryn stood waiting. Their faces darkened as they caught sight of me.
“Have you found her?” Evander asked, his voice tense.
I shook my head. “No.”
“I’ll alert my men,” Callum said immediately. “We’ll find her. Maybe she just took a walk.”
“She would never leave her rabbit behind,” I said, my voice low and fierce. “Let alone let it roam
free. Something’s wrong.”
Nibbles writhed violently, claws scraping my arm. Frustration flared through my worry. “What’s wrong with you?” I snapped at the little creature.
Evander’s gaze flicked to the rabbit, his eyes narrowing as if recalling something. “Put him down,”
he said quietly.
I frowned at him. “What?” I asked in disbelief. “No. What if it runs away too?”
Evander murmured, his voice low and distant, like an echo from some faraway memory. “Follow
the rabbit. That’s what Scylla said.”
I glanced down at Nibbles, still squirming in my arms. Feeling foolish for even talking to a rabbit, I whispered, “Do you know where she is? Can you find her?”
The rabbit stilled, eyes lowering, nose twitching thoughtfully. Slowly, I set him down, half-expecting him to bolt. But instead, he stood on his hind legs and looked back at me.
“Lead the way, boy,” I said quietly. “Find her.”
I followed Nibbles as he darted across the courtyard, the others trailing behind in tense silence. With every step deeper into the forest, my suspicion hardened into certainty-Eirlys had heard Mirael’s poisonous words.
