Chapter 138: Silence, Secrets, and Surprises
EIRLYS’ POV
“I’ll be right here… waiting until you open the door.”

The words twisted in my gut, heavy with guilt. For a moment, I wanted to tear down the ward, to let him in. But I pressed the feeling down and buried my face in Nibbles’ fur. He licked my
cheek, as if he wanted me to go to him.
I shook my head. “No,” I whispered.
I had to stand my ground. Even if it broke me.
I set Nibbles gently on the floor and made my way to the bathing chamber. I needed to wash this awful feeling from my skin-from my very bones. Still being in my training clothes only made everything feel worse, like the day was clinging to me.
I poured every calming oil and scent I could find into the bath, hoping they’d dull the ache inside me. I stayed in the water far longer than I should have, only climbing out once my skin had started to prune from the soak.
In the quiet afterward, I pulled a nightdress from the closet and felt a small wave of relief. Grace and Emma hadn’t moved all my things to Kierygan’s chambers. Even the bed was still neatly made, the sheets fresh, the pillowcases changed. It was as if this space was waiting- just in case I needed it again.
I crept silently back to the door, careful not to make a sound, needing to know if Kierygan
meant what he said that he would wait.
He was still there.
He didn’t move, didn’t speak, but I could feel him on the other side. I could even smell him- faint traces of birchwood and something warmer, something his.
My heart ached.
But I couldn’t open the door. Not yet.
I turned away, each step heavy, and climbed onto my old bed. Curling around Nibbles, I held him close, pressing my face into his fur. Then I pulled a pillow over my head, as if that could shut everything out-the silence, the presence of him just beyond the wood, the war inside
Eventually, exhaustion crept in. My eyes grew heavy. Before sleep pulled me under, I

whispered a quiet prayer.
That he would give up.
That he would go back to our chambers.
That he wouldn’t stay out there all night, waiting.
And then, finally, I drifted off.
Claim
A loud crash shattered the silence.
I jolted upright, heart hammering as shards of glass scattered across the floor like falling stars. The ward on the door still hummed, untouched. But the window… the window was
gone.
In its place yawned a jagged hole, letting in the freezing bite of early winter. And through it, a shadow stepped into the room.
My breath caught in my throat.
Even in the dark, I knew. Kierygan.
He climbed through the wreckage like it was nothing. His eyes found mine instantly-calm on the surface, but the silver swirling in that deep blue told another story. So did the subtle shimmer of scales creeping along his skin.
He was furious. And trying very, very hard not to show it.
He moved toward me with a slow, deliberate grace. Like the predator he was.
My pulse thundered in my ears. The room, cold just moments ago, suddenly felt hot. Suffocating. Alive with the tension between us. For a heartbeat, I couldn’t move. Even Nibbles dove beneath the blankets, vanishing with a frightened squeak.
“Kierygan,” I croaked, my voice catching in my throat. “My window… you destroyed my
window.”
He ignored me and kept coming.
Nibbles leapt into my lap, pressing against me like his tiny body could shield me. I flattened against the headboard, every muscle wound tight with dread.
He didn’t stop until his knees met the edge of the mattress. The bed dipped under his weight -and suddenly, he was above me, his presence filling the room, caging me in without ever

touching me.
Claim
His voice was low, rough, dark as smoke. “So you’d really leave me out there all night. Make me wait like a fool.”
I swallowed hard but forced myself to meet his gaze. “That was your choice. Not mine. If you felt like a fool… that’s on you.”
His jaw tensed, the muscles ticking. I held my breath, bracing for the sharp bite of his temper.
But it didn’t come.
Instead, his words cut through the silence, cold and direct. “Come with me.”
I barely had time to draw a breath before he moved. In one swift motion, he scooped me into
his arms.
Nibbles scrambled after us, leaping onto my stomach as if he could fight the Dragon King
himself.
Kierygan ignored my protests-ignored everything but his own resolve. He strode toward the jagged opening where the window used to be. The night air rushed in, icy against my skin. My stomach dropped as realization hit. He’s going to jump.
“No,” I screamed. “Kierygan, don’t you dare.”
But he did.
Without hesitation, he stepped off the ledge-and the world vanished beneath us.
In the same heartbeat, his body began to shift. His arms became talons curling tightly, but carefully, around me. He held me tight against his scaled chest.
The wind roared past us, tearing at my hair, stinging my cheeks. I clutched Nibbles to my chest, heart racing, breath caught between fear and wonder.
Below us, the world was cloaked in snow, glowing faintly beneath the silver wash of moonlight. It was still snowing. Soft and delicate flakes swirled around us. But wrapped in Kierygan’s heat, I barely felt the cold.
We soared higher, cutting through the thinning night, and I didn’t know whether to scream again… or hold on tighter.
At last, his wings folded and the rush of wind faded. The air stilled. That’s when I realized
where we were-the meadow.
He descended in a slow, spiraling glide, snow swirling beneath us as his talons touched

down. Then, with a shimmer of shifting magic, his massive form began to shrink. In moments, Kierygan stood before me once more-human again, and still holding me in his
arms.
“You can put me down now,” I said, my voice tight.
His gaze flicked to my bare legs. “You’re barefoot,” he said quietly. “And wearing almost nothing in the cold.”
I rolled my eyes. “I wonder whose fault that is,” I muttered, trying to wriggle out of his grip. “I can warm myself.”
He didn’t let go. Instead, he sank to one knee in the snow and settled me across his lap, arms secure around me like a cage I couldn’t quite bring myself to break.
“How long are you going to keep this up?” he asked, voice low.
I met his gaze, defiant. “Depends. How long are you going to be insufferable?”
He huffed, but I turned away before I could catch his expression. My gaze softened instead on Nibbles, bounding through the snow as if the world held no shadows. At least one of us could still be carefree.
A sudden tickle at the tip of my ear made me flinch. They’d been too sensitive since the change-I hated being touched there, and he knew it.
“Stop it,” I hissed, swatting his hand away.
But instead of backing off, he traced the curve of my other ear with maddening delicacy. My whole body jolted in protest.
“Kierygan!”
He did it again, clearly enjoying how uncomfortable I was. Heat surged through me, frustration bubbling over until I snapped-literally. A sharp crackle broke the air, sparks hissing into the snow between us. His fingers caught the edge of it, and I gave him a good burn.
For a heartbeat, I braced for his temper.
But instead, his chest shook, deep laughter spilling out.
“You’re getting feistier by the day,” he said, eyes glinting. “And more stubborn.”
Not in the mood for his mischief, I shoved at him, twisting to slip free of his hold. But he only tightened his arms around me, pulling me back against his chest-iron and warmth all at

kept my eyes fixed on the snow beyond his shoulder, refusing to look at him. Letting him know I wasn’t ready to forgive-not yet.
His breath stirred against my hair as he spoke again, softer. “I have been keeping things from you. But not for the reason you think.”
