Chapter 168: Returned to Light

EIRLYS’ POV

It felt like I had been floating forever.

No light. No sound. No pain. Just the weightless drift through endless dark.

At first, I thought I would fight it-claw my way toward something, anything. But even that will faded. My strength had drained completely, leaving only surrender.

If this was death, then so be it.

I only hoped Kierygan… and the others… had survived. That everything we fought for hadn’t been for nothing.

A soft ache bloomed in my chest. Not from fear, but from sorrow. I had hoped that when death claimed me, it would carry me to where my mother waited. If that was where souls rested… why wasn’t I there with her?

I let myself drift farther into the current. But then, something pulled. A sharp tug at the very core of me, followed by a sting that softened into warmth.

It spread like fire through the void-searing and soothing all at once. Pleasure rippled through the emptiness, making my body jolt, as if some long-forgotten part of me remembered what it meant

to be alive.

My lashes fluttered. The darkness began to thin.

And when my eyes opened, I was no longer adrift-was pressed against someone. Someone solid. Warm. Familiar.

My cheek was nuzzled against Kierygan’s neck, his scent surrounding me. A scent that always felt like home. Relief flooded me so fiercely that it hurt.

I’m alive. I’m with him.

Summoning what little strength I had left, I lifted my trembling arms and wrapped them around him. Weak as they were, I held on.

Kierygan stilled.

He drew back just enough for our eyes to meet, his hand coming up to cradle the back of my head. The warmth of his palm against my skin made my throat tighten. His face was a storm of emotion -shock, disbelief, relief. It was all there, written across his face.

My lips parted, dry and trembling. The only word I managed was a rasping whisper.

“Hi.”

It sounded small, fragile against the silence. But somehow, it was enough.

Kierygan’s eyes widened for a heartbeat-and then he crushed me against him, his arms locking around me as though terrified I might disappear again. His breath came rough and uneven against my hair, each exhale trembling.

“Thank the gods,” he murmured, voice breaking. “You’re back. You’re finally back.”

I wanted to tell him I was grateful too. That I hadn’t been sure I’d ever make it back to him. But the words caught in my throat.

The sound of water sloshing reached my ears, and realized then where we were. The warmth around me wasn’t just from him, it was from the bath. His bare skin. The faint scent of soap and smoke.

Before I could think, his arms shifted beneath me. He rose, lifting me easily from the tub. The cool air kissed my damp skin, drawing a shiver from me as I clung weakly to him.

He carried me through another door. The chamber we entered w

familiar. It wasn’t ours.

I didn’t recognize the white walls or the pale marble floor. The air hummed with a strange, clean energy-soft, almost alive. I didn’t know where we were… but somehow, it felt like home.

I opened my mouth to ask, but Kierygan spoke first “We’re in Vallea Illura,” he said, setting me carefully on the bed as he began drying and dressing me. “I brought us here after the battle.”

I nodded slowly, memories of the devastation still fresh-the crumbling walls, the shattered palace, the ground splitting beneath it all.

“How long… was I asleep?” I asked.

He pulled on his trousers and sat beside me. “You were out for five days,” he said quietly. “I… we were all so worried.”

I gasped, disbelief prickling through me. Nearly a week. No wonder my legs wobbled and my hands shook.

I tilted my head, searching Kierygan’s face, “What… what about the Light Reaper? Is he… dead?” I asked softly.

He took my hand, giving it a firm, reassuring squeeze. A small, weary smile touched his lips. Locked up,” he said, “Along with Morwenna and Mirael.”

I frowned. “Locked up? How… how do you lock up something made of wisps and shadows?”

Kierygan’s expression softened, though a glint of amusement flickered in his eyes. “He’s weakened. Morwenna and Mirael too… they’ve lost their magic. But you’ll see what I mean when you see him yourself.”

Before I could reply, he shifted me gently, settling me on his lap. His expression darkened, a

seriousness I hadn’t seen in a long time. “I want to wait until you wake fully,” he said, his voice low.”

I want you to decide… how you want them executed.”

My chest tightened at the thought, and a faint tremor of fear crept into my bones. Kierygan must have sensed it, because his thumb brushed over my hand. “You won’t see him… not until you’re ready,” he said. “Until you’re strong enough to face im.”

I nodded, grateful for the reprieve.
