Chapter 34: Petals and Fury
EIRLYS’ POV
I woke up feeling light-rested in a way I hadn’t felt in what felt like forever. It must’ve been the longest sleep I’ve had in ages.
Claen
There was no ache in my ribs. No tightness when I breathed. No lingering soreness in my shoulder.
I struggled to recall much of what happened after Kierygan brought me to my room. The last clear thing I remembered was him insisting-firmly-on making me drink that bitter, funny-smelling tea. I wasn’t sure if he stayed after I drifted off, but his scent still lingered in the room.
I sat up slowly, testing my limbs. Nothing twinged or protested. Danaiah’s magic worked better than I’d imagined.
After a quick bath and change, I stepped into the corridor. The air felt cooler than usual, like the palace itself had only just woken.
The garden was quiet when I arrived-early still. I made my way to the cherry tree, its branches heavy with blooms. I sat beneath it, the grass soft beneath my legs, the sunlight filtering through a blush of petals that swayed gently above me. Some drifted loose and tangled in my braid as I flipped open my book, their delicate weight barely noticeable.
Solara will be arriving soon. She was likely already on her way.
Unlike Callum and Nerissa, who stayed in the eastern wing of the palace, Solara chose to live in a cottage nestled near the outer wall-where the vines grew wild, and the forest pressed close, as if
it, too, sought her company.
She told me she runs at night. Not a stroll-she meant shifting into her wolf form and running beneath the moonlight, hunting, chasing, breathing wildness back into her bones. She also grows her own flowers and vegetables. She likes things that need tending.
I admired that about her.
I tilted my face up toward the blossoms again. A breeze passed through, rustling the branches and scattering petals across my open book. I smiled and closed it gently, reaching out to catch one
midair.
That’s when I heard her voice. “You’re looking rather pleased with yourself.”
I sighed before turning.
And there she was-Mirael, standing just beyond the hedges, sunlight catching on the sleek, tight
lines of her dress. It clung to her curves like armor. Her arms were crossed, her eyes glittering like
polished glass.

My spine straightened instinctively.
Clairy
“What a lovely day,” she said, stepping into the garden. The soft swish of her skirts was more menace than music. “Perfect for lounging beneath a tree with a smile and a book. Meanwhile, the rest of us are actually working for the kingdom. Pulling our weight. Trying not to be… burdens.”
My fingers tightened around the book. “I’m not trying to be a burden.”
“Of course you’re not,” she replied sweetly. “You never try. That’s the beauty of it, isn’t it? Always so delicate. So unassuming. So conveniently helpless
She came closer, folding her arms again. “Tell me, how is it not being a burden when you flit around like some pampered princess, and half the palace scrambles the moment you stub a toe or take a
fall?”
My throat tightened. “It wasn’t my fault the horse spooked.”
“No?” she asked, her voice syrupy sweet. “Because t seemed to me you enjoyed everyone fussing
over you.”
I snapped my book shut and rose.
Heat bloomed beneath my skin, curling through my veins like a slow-burning fuse. Light shimmered at my fingertips-soft at first, then brighter with every pulse of anger.
She didn’t say it outright, but I heard the accusation clearly enough.
She thought I wanted the attention. That I’d fallen on purpose.
A faint crackle of light sparked from my palm.
Mirael’s smile curved, slow and sharp.
“Oh, there she is,” she whispered. “There’s the little sparkle.”
But before I could take a single step toward her… she let out a piercing scream.
A terrible, bloodcurdling wail that ripped through the garden.
Then she collapsed to the ground with a dramatic thud, clutching her arm as if it had been seared
to the bone. “She burned me!” she shrieked, voice thick with panic. “She burned me!”
I froze.
“What? I didn’t…” My voice caught in my throat.
She screamed again, louder this time, wild and ragged. “HELP! She lost control!”
Then came the sound of footsteps-fast, heavy.
Kierygan’s voice sliced through the garden, low and thunderous. “What the hell is going on?”

He strode onto the stone path just as Mirael pushed herself to her knees her face twisted in gain. Her sleeve was torn, blackened at the edges, and a blistering red burn bloomed across her arm
“She attacked me,” Mirael cried, tears sliding down her cheeks. She lost control Kier, I didn’t
provoke her-1 swear
My mouth opened-but no words came. Light still crackled at my fingertips, heat pulsing under my
skin.
I was angry. Angry at her lie. Angry at the performance. At the way she tried to twist everything
“She’s lying” I said, stepping back. “I didn’t even touch her
Mirael let out another wail. “My skin!” she gasped, cradling her arm toward him. “It burns”
My voice came quieter now. Disbelieving. That’s not possible….
But Kierygan was already crouching beside her, inspecting the wound. His jaw tensed his eyes lifted-not to her, but to me.
“You need to control your anger, Eirlys” he said, his voice low and cold. “You can’t flare up every time someone says something you don’t like. Your light can kill
“But I wasn’t…”
Mirael cut me off with a faint, trembling moan. “I can’t walk, she whispered. “My legs… the pain… please…
Kierygan’s jaw clenched. He hesitated only a second-then slid an arm under her shoulders and another beneath her knees.
“I’m taking you to the infirmary, he said.
“No,” Mirael murmured quickly. “Just take me to my chamber. Please. I want to rest. Alone.”
He didn’t argue. He started walking.
And as he did, Mirael looked back over his shoulder her eyes meeting mine.
She smiled.
And then laid her head against his chest.
My fists trembled at my sides.
The glow around my skin flared, brighter and sharper, pulsing with each breath I took. Golden threads of light shimmered across my arms, coiling like a storm held just beneath the surface.
The grass beneath me hissed and shriveled. Overhead, the cherry blossoms shuddered-then released their petals in a sudden, frantic flurry of pink and white.
