Chapter 55: Silent Flights, Hidden Threats
KIERYGAN’S POV
My visit to Mirael left me more confused than enlightened.
Thoughts churned like a storm tide as I rounded the corner and climbed one flight up to my wing. Mirael had never hidden her dislike for Eirlys; her jealousy showed itself often enough.
And she certainly had the power. Illusion was her gift-she could weave false sights, scents,
sensations, or sounds that felt utterly real.
The iron circlet around Mirael’s throat-forged by Ashteryn and warded by Ulyanna herself-was no mere trinket. She couldn’t remove it without the magical key. And earlier, I saw it still locked tight
against her skin.
Which meant there could be someone else. After all, many witches had been invited to the ball. Or – perhaps Mirael had found a way to work around the collar’s binds.
I ran a hand through my hair, gripping the strands at my nape in frustration. Too many questions. Too few answers. Each one fraying what remained of my patience.
Whoever was behind this, one thing was certain-they wanted to harm my mate.
I quickened my pace, striding toward my chambers Eirlys would be there, waiting. Hopefully, this time, there will be no interruptions. I needed to speak to her about that kiss.
It had been just a brush of lips, fleeting and soft-yet it rattled me to my core.
I needed to know if she understood what she was doing. If it was the bond affecting her… or if it was mere gratitude for finding her last night.
But when I opened my chamber door, only silence greeted me. My untouched breakfast tray sat by
the window, cold: She was gone.
“Damn it, Eirlys,” I muttered, the curse tearing past my lips.
I told her to stay. Ordered her to stay.
I stepped back out into the hall and crossed swiftly to her room. The faint scent of wildflowers greeted me as I entered, but she was nowhere to be found. Even the rabbit’s cage sat empty.
A low growl rumbled in my chest as I shut her door and stalked down the corridor, eyes narrowed in irritation. I spotted a guard stationed at the corner and fixed him with a sharp glare.
“Have you seen Eirlys?”
The young male straightened instantly. “Yes, Your Majesty. She left not long ago. Sam escorted her
to the infirmary.”

Of course. She couldn’t wait to see Ashteryn.

Without another word, I turned and strode away, my steps echoing down the stairs. I clenched my jaw as I descended two at a time.
I told her we would visit him together.
I strode through the castle halls, each step fueled by a roiling irritation I kept tightly leashed.
When I reached the wide double doors, I pushed them open without slowing. My gaze swept the room, ready to find Ashteryn lying weak in bed while Eirlys perched nearby, rabbit in her lap, murmuring comfort.
Instead… I froze.
For a brief moment, I wondered if I’d stepped into the wrong place entirely.
It looked like I had walked into a tea party I wasn’t invited to.
Beside her, Evander lounged with his ankles crossed, cup balanced carelessly on his knee, while Callum slouched in his chair, boots kicked up against a small table.
Orryx and Solara perched nearby, quietly murmuring to each other as they sipped from porcelain
cups.
And Ashteryn-Ashteryn sat at the center of it all, dressed in a fresh tunic with his hair pulled neatly back, not a single mark or scratch marring his skin.
There was no trace of the injuries he’d sustained last night.
Callum was the first to notice me. His eyes slid toward the door, and a smirk curled his lips. “Told you he’d storm in here.”
Evander chuckled softly behind the rim of his cup. “Indeed. Though I wagered he’d knock first.”
I ignored them, my gaze going straight to Eirlys. Her silver hair fell in gentle waves over her shoulders, her cheeks flushed, lips curling into a nervous smile when our eyes met.
She knew she’d disobeyed me.
“What’s going on here?” I asked, my voice low.
Orryx shrugged. “We’re just trying to stop Ashteryn from breaking down the door while we wait for
Danaiah to finish her tests.”
“I said I’m fine,” Ashteryn grumbled. “I need to get back to my cottage and assess the damage.”
“And you will,” I said firmly. “As soon as Danaiah clears you.”
Ashteryn let out a disgruntled huff. “This is rubbish, he muttered. “You know damn well I don’t do
idle.”

Eirlys let out a light laugh. “You should listen to them,” she said gently, “You nearly died, Ashteryn. I couldn’t believe you survived those wounds last night. I really thought… I really thought you’d left
US.”
My frown deepened. She didn’t know. They hadn’t told her yet. I parted my lips to speak, but caught sight of Evander across the room. He gave subtle shake of his head.
With a sigh, I pulled out a chair and sat down across from her. She lifted her cup to her lips, but suddenly froze. Her head snapped to the side at the exact moment her rabbit stirred at her feet, its ears flicking and nose twitching rapidly as it looked in the same direction she did.
I said nothing-only watched her silently.
Nibbles hopped onto her lap, its body tense, eyes fixed on that unseen point.
This wasn’t the first time this had happened. The first was at Ashteryn’s cottage, when she told me she thought she felt something.
And days later, his cottage was broken into.
A cold knot tightened in my chest. I rose to my feet quietly, fixing her with a narrowed stare. “Stay with them, Eirlys,” I said, my voice low but firm. “And for gods’ sake, obey me this time.”
Callum let out a low chuckle. “Don’t worry,” he said, tipping his head back against his chair. “We’ll keep an eye on her for you.”
I left the room without another word, the muffled sounds of their chatter fading behind me. I
needed to find Ulyanna.
I found her near the library, deep in conversation with a young witch apprentice about the day’s training schedule. Her dark gaze flicked up the moment she sensed my approach, locking onto mine. The girl beside her fell silent, eyes wide, and stepped back instinctively.
I didn’t break stride as I passed them, but my voice was low and precise as I murmured just loud enough for Ulyanna to hear. “At the dragon’s breath
A phrase only she and I would understand.
I caught the faintest flicker of acknowledgment in her eyes before she turned back to the girl, her voice calm as she dismissed her with a gentle pat on the shoulder. The apprentice curtsied quickly and scurried away down the hall.
Before the girl even rounded the corner, Ulyanna vanished in a swirl of silver light.
I continued on, moving through the silent halls until stepped out into the courtyard. There, beneath the open sky, I let the change take me.
My body expanded and shifted, bones stretching, scales rippling into existence. Wings unfurled

with a low metallic groan. I swept them down with a single, powerful stroke, propelling myself
skyward.
The ground fell away beneath me. Wind roared past, battering against my glass-like scales as sunlight splintered across their mirrored surface. Then, with a slow exhale, I folded the light around myself-my form dissolving into the blue, leaving only a faint, shimmering distortion in the air.
No one would see me. No one would know where I flew.
