Chapter 59: Silent Guards
EIRLYS‘ POV
I was back in the forest again.

The same crushing darkness pressed in from all sides. The same shadowed figure loomed ahead, its presence swallowing the mist. The same taunting voices of Malric and Morwenna echoed through the trees. And the same warning from that hooded figure: He’s coming for me.
The terror felt just as real as before.
“Eirlys,” a voice called softly–warm, familiar, grounding me. Even before my eyes opened, I knew who it was.
When I blinked the dream away, Kierygan was there sitting at the edge of my bed. His silhouette was dark against the faint pre–dawn glow behind him.
“You’re having nightmares again,” he murmured.
I sat up against the headboard, rubbing my eyes. “It’s the same one,” I whispered.
I’d been having the same dream for several nights now. Every time, Kierygan would be there when I woke. I didn’t understand how he always knew. It wasn’t like I screamed or made any loud noises in my sleep.
But then again… he was a dragon. He could probably hear the faintest sound from miles away.
“Tell me,” he said softly, wiping the cold sweat from my forehead. “What did you see this time?”
I hugged my knees to my chest. “That dark figure again,” I whispered. “Malric and Morwenna… and that figure telling me he’s coming for me.”
Even though I’d told him about it again and again, he still asked every time. Maybe it was just his way of calming me down. If it was, it worked. Although, honestly… just him being here was enough to make the fear ease from my chest.
He shifted to sit beside me against the headboard, his presence warm and solid. “Go back to sleep,” he murmured. “I’ll stay here.”
I nodded, lowering myself back onto the pillows. But I hesitated, staring up at him in the dim light. I… I saw something else tonight,” I said quietly. “They were blurred, but… they glowed. Just like me.”
He frowned. “Tell me more.”
“I couldn’t see their faces,” I whispered. “But… they looked like they were reaching for me.”
He didn’t speak, but his silence felt heavy with thought. He sat there, leaning his head back against the wood, eyes distant with quiet contemplation.

A pang of guilt twisted in my chest. I was keeping him up every night. He always stayed until I fell asleep, sacrificing his own rest just to keep me calm.
I swallowed. “Kierygan?” I called softly.
He tilted his head toward me. “Yeah?”
“Do you want… do you want to lie beside me?” I asked, my voice small.
He didn’t respond at first. I could feel his hesitation, his quiet internal battle. But when I moved aside, creating space for him, I heard him sigh softly before he lowered himself onto the bed beside me.
Kierygan lay back, one arm tucked beneath his head, while I turned onto my side, facing away from him.
Silence settled between us, broken only by the quiet rhythm of his breathing. I stared at the
moonlit shadows dancing along the wall, my mind adrift. Slowly, his breaths grew deeper, slow and even. Then came a faint, almost inaudible snore.
A small smile curved my lips. The sound–so human and unguarded–loosened the tightness in my chest. My own eyes fluttered shut, the steady rise and fall of his chest behind me lulling me into drowsy comfort.
Within moments, sleep claimed me.
When I woke, light was slipping softly through the curtains. I blinked, taking in the warmth cocooning me from all sides. At some point in the right, I’d turned toward him.
I was curled into his chest, my head tucked beneath his chin, his strong arms wrapped securely around me. One of my hands rested against his bare chest, feeling the steady thrum of his heartbeat beneath my palm. His breath fanned softly against my ear, warm and slow.
He was still asleep, so I stayed perfectly still, not wanting to wake him. But as if sensing I was awake, he stirred, his hold tightening slightly around me.
I pulled away quickly, my face burning as I scrambled to sit up. His arms loosened their hold, and he rolled onto his back with a low groan before pushing himself upright.
His eyes, still heavy with sleep, flicked to the window. Then they widened slightly, and he let out a sharp breath.
“We’ve already missed breakfast,” he said, his voice rough with sleep.
I blinked and glanced toward the window. The sun was already high in the sky. We had both slept far later than usual.
“Oh,” was all I managed to say.

“You should get dressed,” he said, already swinging his legs over the side of the bed. “I’ll see you in
the dining hall shortly.”
Without another word, he stood and left the room, leaving me sitting there, heart thundering
against my ribs.
KIERYGAN’S POV
I arrived in the dining hall before her. The servants moved quietly, setting down trays of roasted
meats, fresh bread, fruits, and spiced tea.
It was a late meal today–just the two of us. Everyone else had already gone about their day.
I never slept in. Not once. Not during exile. Not as king. There was never time for such indulgence
when the world demanded so much.
But with her beside me…I had.
I shook off the thought, leaning back in my chair as reached absently for a cup of tea. The steam
curled up to warm my face, but I paused mid–motion.
I felt her approaching before I saw her–her presence brushing against my senses like a silent tide.
She entered with a slight frown tugging at her lips. After a fleeting glance and a forced smile in my
direction, she sank into the chair to my right.
“Is there a problem?” I asked, setting down my cup.
She huffed softly. “Someone’s been following me for days,” she murmured, her pout almost…
adorable. “I don’t like it.”
My gaze flicked over her shoulder to where Sam stood near the doorway, silent and vigilant. ” That’s Sam,” I said calmly. “He’s following you because I ordered him to.”
“To make sure you’re safe,” I said evenly. “In case someone tries to attack you…or you wander off
again.”
She bit her lip, lowering her gaze to the plate in front of her as she began to eat. I could tell she
wasn’t thrilled with the idea, but she chose not to protest.
We finished breakfast in silence. When she was done, she stood and smoothed down her skirts.
“I’ll be with Solara all day,” she said quietly, her eyes avoiding mine. “In the library.”
I gave a curt nod. “Stay with her until dinner.”
She nodded once before turning away, Sam trailing behind her like a silent shadow. I watched her
leave, then rose to my feet and headed toward the training fields.
