Chapter 86: Of Warnings and Worries

KIERYGAN’S POV

+25 Points

I just watched as Eirlys shoved back her chair and stormed off, each step punctuated with a

stomp.

I should’ve stopped them from teasing her. Should’ve said something. But gods help me-I didn’t. I

couldn’t.

The way she flushed… the way she fought to keep her composure and failed so exquisitely-it

thrilled me more than it should have.

It took everything in me not to show it. Not to let the corner of my mouth twitch, not to shift. Not to betray a flicker of reaction while the rest of the table fell into stunned silence-everyone except Callum, Orryx, and Evander, whose smug grins lingered far too long.

They knew. Ulyanna too, though she had the good sense to school her expression.

The others? Left wide-eyed and whispering behind their goblets. Let them. Let them speculate.

“What was that about?” Mirael finally asked, her curiosity getting the better of her as she turned to

Callum.

He gave her a lazy shrug. “Just a private joke,” he said. “We like teasing her.”

Mirael clearly wasn’t convinced. Her eyes flicked to me, searching for a crack in my expression. She found none.

She opened her mouth to press further, but Ulyanna spoke first.

“I’m paying a visit to the human territory,” she said. “I need to assess how far the blight has spread.”

I nodded once. “I want to see it for myself.”

“I’d be happy to accompany you,” Mirael said suddenly, a little too quickly. “It’s been a while since I walked among mortals.”

Ulyanna crossed her arms. “This isn’t a leisure outing, Mirael.”

But Mirael remained undeterred, her eyes alight with something too eager. “I could be useful.”

I rose to my feet, pushing my chair back with deliberate calm. “Your assistance won’t be needed today.”

Then I turned to Ulyanna, gaze steady. “Meet me in my study. There’s something we need to discuss before we leave.”

Ulyanna entered my private study without knocking, closing the door behind her with a wave of her hand. A faint shimmer pulsed through the air as she cast a ward over the room.

“I may have forgotten to mention the seer I met in the market yesterday,” I said, getting straight to

the point.

She settled into the chair across from me. “Evander told me a bit,” she said. “He was… less than impressed. Thinks she’s just another charlatan.”

I let out a dry snort. “Evander thinks that of every witch he meets,” I said, shaking my head.” Present company and your coven excluded, of course.”

“She might still be,” Ulyanna said with a shrug. “But it doesn’t hurt to consider her words.”

“Agreed,” I murmured. “The being of light-that’s Eirlys. I have no doubt. But the darkness… it’s been echoing in my head ever since.”

A long silence stretched between us.

Then I leaned forward, resting my clasped hands on the desk. “Do you remember her dreams? The dark hooded figure?” I asked. “I always thought it was just her fear… a manifestation of the trauma

she’s endured.”

Ulyanna leaned back, cradling her chin between her fingers, her brows drawn in thought. “You think it could be something more?”

“I’m not certain,” I said quietly. “But if those dreams were memories… then the hooded figure might not be a symbol at all. It could be real.”

Ulyanna’s lips parted slightly. “A real entity?”

I nodded

Silence stretched between us.

“We need to find the seer again,” I said at last. “She mentioned her visions come in fragments. She may have more to share.”

Ulyanna hummed in thought. “Did you get a name?”

“No,” I replied. “She vanished like smoke before we could ask.”

Ulyanna exhaled through her nose. “Charming,” she muttered, rising to her feet. “We’ll start looking

for her.”

She made it to the door, then paused, glancing back over her shoulder. “And what of Vallea Illura?” she asked. “Weren’t we supposed to be seeking answers there, too?”

I stilled, my jaw tightening. “We will. After the festival,” I said. “Val’Thirael is overrun with blight. If we go unprepared, we might not even make it halfway to Vallea Illura before it consumes us.”

Ulyanna nodded. “Understood. We’ll make the necessary preparations,” she said. “In the meantime, there’s a human village waiting for our help. I’ll meet you there.”

Without another word, she stepped out of the study

I remained seated for a moment longer, staring at nothing-then rose and headed outside.

As I stepped into the courtyard, the crisp morning air met me like a blade-sharp, clean, awake. Orryx and Callum were approaching, deep in conversation, but stopped the moment they spotted

WALAL

“I’m heading to the human village,” I said. “You know what to do.”

Orryx nodded. “Of course. We’ll keep the kingdom secure.”

Callum inclined his head, the message clear between us. “Eirlys is with Solara. They’re in the gardens. Sam’s nearby-watching her like a hawk.”

“Add another guard,” I ordered.

Orryx snorted. “Ah, the worried secret lover.”

I gave him a flat look. It only made his grin widen.

“She’s safer than you think,” he added. “You’re forgetting Solara’s a seasoned fighter too.”

Callum chuckled. “He’s not wrong. Those two sparred once-she nearly took his balls off.”

Orryx raised a brow. “I was going easy on her.”

Callum smirked. “Sure. Keep telling yourself that.”

I shook my head as they carried on, their voices fading behind me. Then I shifted-wings tearing through the air as I soared toward Greenhollow, where Ulyanna waited.

I spotted Ulyanna the moment I shifted back. Her green robe stood out starkly against the rot and ash-like a single leaf refusing to wither.

“It’s worse than we thought,” she said, her voice low threaded with disbelief. “Far worse than Silver

Pine.”

I scanned the land around us. What had once been fertile fields were now nothing but barren stretches of cracked, lifeless earth. Trees stood like blackened bones, their limbs stripped bare. Carcasses lay rotting at the edges of the road, stiff and bloated. Even the river had turned sluggish and foul, its waters stagnant and choked with decay.

Just up ahead lay the borders of Morvanya. I recalled my promise to King Lucius-protection from the blight in exchange for his support. And I never turned back on my word.

I exhaled through my nose, the weight of it all pressing against my chest. “What can we do?”

“Inhabitants are being evacuated as we speak,” Ulyanna said. “The only thing we can do for now is

delay the spread.”
