Chapter 99: Forgotten Light
EIRLYS’ POV
“Prophecy?” Kierygan’s voice echoed through the chamber, sharp and clear. “About Eirlys?”

My breath caught. I turned toward Scylla, who still stood motionless in the center of the room, bathed in the starlit glow above. Her emerald eyes lifted, slow and deliberate, tracing the celestial
carvings on the ceiling.
“This isn’t just about her,” she said quietly. “It’s about everything. The realms. All of us.”
She paused, drawing in a breath as if the weight of t pressed on her ribs.
“But…” Her voice dropped, almost reverent. “She’s at the center of it all.”
My knees threatened to give. Kierygan’s grip tightened around my hand, steadying me.
A low growl rumbled from his chest. “Explain,” he demanded.
Scylla parted her lips to speak, but before a sound could escape, her knees buckled beneath her.
“Scylla!” I shouted.
Her entire body convulsed. Her eyes had gone eerily blank, yet her pupils darted frantically from side to side. Beads of sweat formed along her brow, and her lips moved in a silent conversation
with something only she could see.
“What the hell is happening to her?” Evander roared rushing forward. It was the first time he’d reacted to her with anything other than cold disdain.
But Ulyanna raised a hand, stopping Evander in his tracks.
“She’s fine,” she said, her voice calm, but the strain beneath it was unmistakable. “She’s having a
vision.”
I pressed a hand to my chest, trying to quiet the frantic rhythm of my heart. Kierygan stood
motionless beside me, his arm wrapping protectively around my waist.
Then, with a sharp inhale, Scylla collapsed forward onto her palms, gasping like someone dragged
from deep water.
Ulyanna rushed to her, dropping to her knees. “Scylla,” she said urgently. “What did you see?”
She shot Ulyanna a quick glance, then snapped her head toward me, eyes wide with dread. “He
knew you were here.”
I froze. “What? Who?”
“He sensed your light,” she said, scrambling to her feet, urgency sharpening every word. “We have

to go. Now. Before he gets here.”
For a single heartbeat, none of us moved, each of us trying to make sense of her words.

Then dust sifted down from the ceiling. A deep groan echoed beneath the stone floor. And the palace began to shake.
It started subtly, a faint tremor underfoot. But it escalated fast, growing violent. The walls shuddered. Cracks snaked across the marble tiles. Debris rained from the ornate ceiling like falling
ash.
Scylla snarled and pushed herself to her feet. “For stars’ sake, just move! There’s no time,” she snapped. “I’ll explain everything later. Let’s just go!”
So we ran.
Kierygan seized my hand and yanked me after him. The others followed close behind, our footsteps thundering through the dim, echoing halls. With every stride, the tremors grew worse, but somehow, we made it out of the palace.
Outside, the mist had thickened, clinging to our skin and filling our lungs. Breathing was a struggle.
Then the ground split open beneath us.
Black, brittle-looking roots bu
through the earth, writhing like serpents. They cracked stone,
clawed at the air, and closed in fast.
More of them burst through the cracks-gnarled roots, like those of long-dead trees. But right now,
they looked alive and furious.
They lunged at us, moving with a mind of their own
One snapped toward me.
Kierygan spun, cleaving it mid-air, the edge of his blade catching the firelight. “Behind me,” he
commanded. “Draw your sword.”
I didn’t hesitate. I pulled it from my back and raised it, ready for the roots lashing toward me.
Ashteryn fought beside him, his daggers flashing. Ulyanna and Scylla hurled bursts of magic, light and shadow colliding in violent waves.
Evander-faster than any of us-moved like a phantom through the fray, tearing the roots apart
with his bare hands. But even he was being pushed back.
Through the chaos, Scylla’s voice rang out, sharp and desperate. “Your Highness! Get her out of
here. Now!”
Kierygan growled in protest. “I’m not leaving anyone behind.”

“Go!” Ulyanna snapped, nodding firmly. “We’ll be right behind you!”
He hesitated-just for a second. Then his eyes met mine, and something unspoken passed
between us.
In the next breath, he shifted.

I braced myself, expecting him to lower himself so could climb on, but instead, he spread his wings and launched into the air. His dragon form circled once overhead before diving.
In a sudden sweep, his talons closed around me. I yelped, the ground vanishing beneath my feet.
Below us, the earth writhed with roots-twisting, snapping, refusing to die. I glanced down, heart pounding, watching the others still locked in battle.
I spotted Evander-one foot and a hand trapped, struggling to break free. Then a root lashed across his face. He groaned, stumbling back, blood seeping between his fingers as he clutched his
eyes.
“No!” I screamed, reaching toward him. “Evander!”
A piercing cry tore from my throat as another root lunged, aiming straight for his heart.
But Scylla was faster.
She threw herself in front of him. Light burst from her like a sunflare-and in an instant, they were
gone.
My breath caught. I twisted, frantically scanning for the others.
Ulyanna and Ashteryn stood back-to-back, encircled, magic and blades blazing in tandem. Ulyanna looked up at me. Our eyes met. Then she touched Ashteryn’s shoulder.
In a flash of arcane light, they disappeared too.
Now, we were alone in the sky. Just Kierygan and me.
Far below, Val’Thirael was cloaked in shadow. From above, it looked like a black dome, pulsing with
malevolence.
When I looked ahead, Solmere stretched across the sky, its light cutting through the mist. Kierygan’s wings began to slow as he descended. Then, mid-air, he shifted-his talons melting into hands and arms, though they still held me close, refusing to let go.
Ulyanna and Ashteryn landed just ahead, their boots skidding across the stone courtyard.
A moment later, Kierygan touched down with a solid thud.
“Are you alright?” he asked, gently setting me down, though his arms remained wrapped around

I nodded.
He gave me a reassuring squeeze. “You did great back there.”
“I’ve been training hard,” I replied.
He chuckled. “I know,” he said. “I’ve been watching you.”

Warmth bloomed across my cheeks-but before the heat could rise fully, another thud hit the
earth.
This time, it was louder and heavier.
We all turned toward the sound.

Evander lay sprawled across the cobblestones. He blinked, his eyes no longer bloodied or bruised
-they had healed. On top of him was Scylla, her arms wrapped tightly around his chest.
Evander groaned. “You can get off me now, witch,” he muttered, scowling.
Scylla only smirked. “Why, you’re welcome, butcher she purred, clearly far too pleased with
herself.
With a grunt, Evander shoved her off. She rolled aside as he sat up, brushing dirt from his torn
tunic. Then he froze. His fingers came away red.
It wasn’t his blood.
His gaze shifted to Scylla. She lay still now, one hand twitching weakly, her eyes shut.
That’s when I saw it-the hole, clean and brutal, right in the center of her chest. She was still
breathing, but barely.
“Oh no,” I whispered.
I didn’t think Evander’s already pale complexion could grow any paler, but in that moment, his skin
turned corpse-white. The realization hit him like a blow.
Scylla had taken the strike meant for his heart.
