“Do you even believe that? Stefan’s laugh was cold. “We’re done. Stop chasing me. It’s pathetic. Unless you’re here looking for company-I can call some male escorts for you.”

Margery stumbled back. She remembered this man. The devotion. The tenderness. The way he’d given her everything. Now this cold indifference.

When Eric, the Pl she’d hired, called to say Stefan was at Juno Club, she’d rushed over from her office, heart full of hope.

That hope had curdled into something that choked her.

“Get out.” Stefan’s voice was ice. “She’s mine tonight. Who the hell are you to interfere? Don’t know how to end things cleanly? Want me to get rough?”

“You… you hit me? For some call girl?”

Her cheek reddened. Tears welled, spilled. Her voice cracked.

“Interfere again, and I’ll hit you again.”

He exhaled smoke, glancing at the girl clinging to him. “Besides, she’s not ‘some call girl.’ She’s a family’s hope.”

“Gambling dad. Sick mom. Little brother still in school. Sweet, poor thing…” Stefan went on. “What did you just do? You nearly took away this family’s only hope. You understand?”
