Chapter 145 One Last Chance
“Just seeing your WhatsApp pop up now and then-maybe catching a glimpse of your moments-that’s enough. I just need to know you’re still there.”
Her voice dropped to something barely above a whisper, raw with pleading. “Please… I’m begging you.”
Stefan didn’t answer right away. He stood there for a long moment, then exhaled a heavy cloud of smoke.
Finally, he pulled out his phone and opened his QR code. “Fine. We’ll reconnect. But I’m warning you-don’t spam me. One unwanted message and you’re blocked again.”
It wasn’t that he wanted her back in his life. It was simpler than that-she’d already hired a Pl. Who knew what she’d try next if he didn’t give her something?
Margery scrambled for her phone, scanned the code, and sent the request. Her eyes darted between Stefan and her screen until- there it was. Accepted. Her tear-streaked face broke into a genuine smile for the first time since he’d walked out.
She was overjoyed just to have Stefan’s contact again. It was more than enough for her.
It was the first step toward winning him back.
Stefan turned the handle and pushed the door open.
Outside, Gavin was suddenly very interested in the microphone, belting out lyrics with exaggerated passion.
He looked utterly absorbed. Completely convincing.
Stefan shot him a look. “So you were silent the whole time I was in there, but the second step out, you’re suddenly performing? Who’s the audience?”
Gavin grinned sheepishly, “I was singing. For real. Hey, so… Margery? Is she okay?”
“What are you really asking?”
Stefan dropped onto the sofa and took a drink. “She’s fine. Don’t worry about it.”
The girls were still there. Stefan waved them over, and they flocked back like moths to a flame.
Margery didn’t come out right away. Her face was a mess, and her clothes had gotten dirty when she fell. She needed a minute to clean up.
About ten minutes later, she finally emerged.
