Mrs. Zeller helped Connor into the car.
The engine hummed to life, and the automatic gates swung open.
Jillian watched the car pull out.
Desperate not to let them see her in such a pathetic state, she quickly ducked behind the bushes near the bench.
She waited until the car was completely out of sight before stepping out of hiding.
As she left The Yale Residences, Jillian felt utterly lost.
It was as if a thick fog had rolled into her mind, making everything seem confusing and foreign.
By the time she got back to her apartment, a splitting headache set in, a deep ache settling into her very bones.
From past experience, she knew she was running a fever.
She called Daniel to take a sick day.
Daniel told her to get plenty of rest.
After hanging up, Jillian felt completely drained. She didn't want to move a muscle; she just wanted to sink into her bed and sleep forever.
But then her phone rang again. It was Judith. "Connor went to school, right? Well, I made some of your favorites. I'm bringing them over."
Hearing her mother's gentle, caring voice, Jillian couldn't hold it back anymore and burst into tears over the phone.
Judith sounded panicked. "Jill, what's wrong? Tell me! Did that awful Mrs. Zeller do something to you again?"
Once her sobs subsided, Jillian gave Judith her new address.
Judith fell silent for a moment before hanging up.
About forty minutes later, Judith arrived.
She brought containers packed with BBQ ribs, beef stew, grilled shrimp, and a fresh salad—all of Jillian's favorites.
After eating and taking some medicine,
Jillian finally felt a little better.
"How could Killian treat you like this? I'm going to have a word with him!" Judith fumed.
"Mom!" Jillian stopped her.
The Quincy family might look down on her and humiliate her, but in her mother's eyes, she was the best child in the world.
"Mom, I've figured it out. I gave Connor too much love in the past, and it made him think everything revolves around him. After the divorce, Killian will get custody. I'll fulfill my duties as a mother, but I'm not going to pour my entire soul into him anymore."
Judith patted her daughter's back sympathetically. "Whatever you decide, I support you."
"By the way, you waited outside the estate all night. Did Killian never come home?"
Jillian nodded.
If a car had pulled into the driveway in the middle of the night, she definitely would have heard it.
"Is Killian having an affair?"
Jillian froze. After a long moment, she nodded.
"Who is she?"
Jillian smiled bitterly. "An old college friend. They grew up together."
Judith hesitated. "Then... did he only break up with her because you got pregnant with Connor?"
