The overwhelming romantic atmosphere had instinctively made her assume Killian was about to propose.
First, she had expected the ring to be hidden among the roses, but there was nothing.
When Killian presented the cake, she assumed the ring was baked inside. But after meticulously eating more than half of it, she still found absolutely nothing.
Her high hopes completely dashed, she felt a wave of profound disappointment and embarrassment. Yet, to maintain her dignity, she tried desperately to mask her feelings.
Suddenly, Connor jumped up from his seat and shouted, "Dad! I don't agree to this!"
Killian raised an eyebrow, looking at him. "Don't agree to what?"
Connor pointed an accusatory finger at the cake on the table, his face dead serious. With all this romantic setup, even he thought his dad was proposing to Sylvia.
"We're just having dinner. You're overthinking it," Killian replied with a faint, reassuring smile.
Sylvia looked even more mortified. She quickly chimed in to save face. "I wasn't thinking anything of the sort! Connor just misunderstood."
She reached out, trying to playfully pinch Connor's cheek to lighten the mood, but the boy viciously swatted her hand away.
The smile instantly froze on Sylvia's face, her expression icing over.
Connor slumped back into his chair, crossing his arms. "It better be just dinner."
Killian's phone buzzed with several incoming texts. They were all from Jillian.
Seeing that he hadn't replied, Jillian's temper finally flared. "I specifically told you I had unavoidable work on the 26th. That was over a week ago. What does that have to do with today?"
Killian stared down at the screen, his long fingers pausing over the keyboard. Ultimately, he didn't type a single word. He simply locked the screen and set the phone face down.
After dinner, Killian took Connor back to the house, while Sylvia climbed into her own car, clutching the massive bouquet of roses.
As the door shut, she slumped exhaustedly against the leather seats. Staring at the roses beside her, a wave of intense irritation washed over her.
As the chauffeur pulled into traffic, she ordered coldly, "Pull over at the next intersection."
